The final day of play at the 2015 Eckerd Softball Tournament was one Colorado Christian Softball hopes soon to forget. A pair of losses and some misfortune at the plate left the Cougars stinging on Sunday, as the blue and gold lost 2-0 to Tampa before stumbling 9-2 to Barry in their worst loss of the season.
Â
Though it ended on a low note, Christian's day started relatively well. Matched up against the nation's 17
th ranked Tampa Spartans, the Cougars used nifty pitching and impressive field play to hold a powerful UT team at bay. The Spartans hung two on the board in the first three innings, but wouldn't score again against CCU pitchers
Katie Edison and
Tana Feiner. Edison allowed six hits in a little more than five innings of work, but the Enterprise, OR native also turned away five Tampa batters with a five-strikeout effort.
Â
Offensively, the Cougars managed just five hits as a team – with upperclassmen
Jessica Romine,
Sarah Rasmussen,
Danielle Romine,
Dana Rex, and
Stephanie Tatham getting the work done. Tampa tallied just two more hits than CCU, but benefited from a triple and a home run to stay on top of the Cougars.
Â
Though they ended the morning affair confident from a well-played game, Colorado Christian's fortunes turned in the finale. Three errors and unrecoverable woes at the plate had the Cougars on their heels, as Barry jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the third. CCU would score in the third and then again in the fourth, but BU had sparked a head of steam they would build on the rest of the way. While the Christian squad mustered just four hits, Barry unleashed for 16.
Â
Just has she had all weekend long, senior
Jessica Romine carried the Cougar offense on her back. Romine's 2-for-2 effort included a single and a double.
Â
Three Christian pitchers shared time in the circle, with senior
Mariah Bledsoe getting the start and the loss.
Jennie Winston and
Tana Feiner also did work in the contest.
Â
Though their appearance in the Eckerd Tournament is over, three doubleheaders will keep the Cougars in Florida for the week. They'll face Florida Southern again on Wednesday, eager to avenge a tough Saturday loss.
