Metro State knocked off CCU 5-4 in extra innings and 4-1 to take games two and three of the weekend series in Denver.
Despite a late lead in the opener and a great effort on the mound from
Matt Weaver, the Cougars couldn't hold their two-run advantage and were clipped by the Roadrunners in the ninth. Christian was less effective in the close of the day, scoring a run in the first inning but tallying just a single hit for the contest.
Taylor Dudley and
Pete McWilliams bookended the Cougar scoring, each homering in game one and a
Jerry Gallegos double in the fourth meant Christian were in prime position to even the series at a game apiece.
A rally, however, by Metro in the late innings tied the score and forced extra frames.
Matt Weaver flashed more of his potential as the freshman went six innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five while only allowing two earned runs.
Danny Graves, on in relief, would have to take his first loss of the season despite three strikeouts and a single earned run.
CCU started quickly in the day's final contest, pushing a run across the plate in the first, but unfortunately the guests were shut down in the innings that followed.
A Gallegos single, and subsequent throwing errors put the freshman outfielder 90 feet from home.
Taylor Dudley's sacrifice fly and third RBI of the day scored Gallegos but Christian's lead would be short lived.
The Cougars were held hitless over the final six innings, unable to get anything going against Metro State pitching.
Austin Atkerson and
Garret Henrichsen put in work on the mound, with Atkerson the game's losing pitcher.
Now sitting at 7-12, Colorado Christian wrap up the four game set tomorrow afternoon. The Cougars will look to avoid the sweep with first pitch slated for noon.
