Colorado Christian survived a late scare in Wednesday's first game and a slow start in the second to come away with a 10-8, 13-8 doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Â
Despite some big innings by OPSU, it was the Cougars' offense that provided the biggest fireworks. Led by shortstop
Zach Scott's 10 RBI day, CCU pounded out 22 hits- eight of them going for extra bases.
Â
Scott set the tone for the afternoon in his first at bat, homering to left field to start a five run first inning for the Cougars.
Dustin Conley and
Titan Marler also drove in runs in the inning as the hosts began to build a sizable lead.
Â
A Conley double in the second gave Christian a sixth run, and four more crossed the plate an inning later to push the lead to eight. With the bases loaded, Scott unleashed a triple down the right field line to clear the bases and bring his RBI tally to five. A batter later, Scott came around to score when
Taylor Dudley doubled.
Â
Even with plenty of run support, CCU starter
Daniel Bednarski picked up his first win of the season by throwing four of the game's seven innings and striking out five. A two-run double was the only blemish on the junior's afternoon.
Â
The lead was seemingly safe until the Aggies put together a rally in their final at-bat to make the Cougars and their fans slightly nervous. Five runs in the seventh cut the Christian lead to two, and with the bases full of Aggies,
Alistair Reynolds was called upon to record the final out and slam the door on the visitors.
Â
Game two held the opposite narrative of the first for Christian as they were the team fighting to overcome a large deficit, and in one explosive inning the hosts made that deficit disappear. Trailing 8-2 in the fifth, the Cougars hung 11 runs on the board, wearing out three different Panhandle pitchers in the process.
Â
Zach Scott continued his tear by doubling twice in the inning- the first a two-run effort and the second clearing every bag to give the Scottsdale, AZ native five RBI in the inning and bring his total to 10 for the day.
Â
Austin Atkerson and
Dustin Conley singled to drive in runs,
Jerry Gallegos and
Justin Crider both walked with the bases loaded to bring a man home and an error by the Aggies' second baseman helped the Cougars score two more in what was the most lopsided inning in recent memory.
Â
Garret Henrichsen, on in relief of starter
Jackson Gaskins, got his third win of 2015 as he exited after the fiery Christian fifth. Henrichsen and
Danny Graves, who pitched the final two frames, held the opponents to two hits in a combined 4 1/3 innings.
Â
"It was an overall team win," said Henrichsen. "The offense picked up the pitching, it was my job to just throw strikes and let the great defense play behind me and Titan (Marler) caught a great game. We're just looking forward to the weekend's series."
Â
Perhaps more than his big day at the plate,
Zach Scott was pleased to put an end to the team's five-game losing streak.
Â
"It's a great feeling to get the sweep today. It has been a grind lately and finally getting rewarded feels nice. I'm really proud of the guys for staying in the game and never losing focus," remarked Scott. "Hopefully this becomes a part of who we are as a team and in return, the wins will keep coming."
Â
Christian look to build on this latest streak and turn two wins into three as they travel to Adams State this weekend. The three-day, four-game set begins Friday with a 3 PM first pitch.
