Colorado Christian Baseball caught fire Friday. Though they were down for five innings at Adams State in Alamosa, the Cougars ignited for nine runs in late innings on the way to their third win (10-3) in Rocky Mountain Athletic play this year. It was the second game in a row the CCU squad would rally to come back big after starting slow.
Â
Just one run stood on the board for the Cougars through five innings, meaning the home Grizzlies would carry a narrow 2-1 lead heading into the sixth. Fortunately, the ASU advantage would evaporate in that inning, when a
Dustin Conley double to right center scored
Zach Scott and
Taylor Dudley. Conley would cross home three batters later, thanks to a
Weston Wiederhold double to left field.
Brandon Hesselberg's one-RBI single rounded out the CCU scoring in the sixth, and gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead.
Â
Silent in response, ASU could do little to stop the fate of the game. A Grizzly error with bases loaded in the eighth got the Christian squad rolling again, and set up a streak of runs that would put the game out of reach for Adams State. Hesselberg's three-RBI double put CCU up 9-2 in that frame, and set up the tenth – a Hesselberg score off a
Jerry Gallegos single.
Â
Adams answered with just one run in the ninth.
Â
Ryan Erazo's (2-3) impressive performance from the mound earned him the Friday win. Erazo gave up just one earned run and fanned six ASU batters before being relieved in the eighth by senior
Garret Henrichsen.
Â
Hesselberg finished the game with four RBI and two runs on a 3-for-4 effort from the plate. Conley added two RBI and two runs after going 3-for-5.
Â
CCU will return to the ASU field Saturday, set to play a doubleheader against the 7-13 Grizzlies.
