Louthan and Meyer Lead Cougars to Victory

Colorado Christian took to the road in New Mexico on Saturday night as they took on Western New Mexico University and came away with the 74-54 victory. Kate Louthan and Ali Meyer were outstanding on the night as they led the team to victory and each secured a double double in the game. It was the fourth straight victory on the season for CCU as they improve their overall record to 8-3, and now have a 5-2 conference record.

A 20 point victory seemed like a tall task for the Cougars on the road especially after a first quarter in which they went down early trailing 21-11 at the end of the quarter. However, they were able to bounce back in the second quarter and erase the deficit as they outscored the Mustangs by a score of 20-7 in the period, which secured them a narrow 31-28 lead at halftime.

The second half was very similar to the second quarter as CCU utilized their suffocating defense combined with a stellar offensive onslaught to secure the convincing victory. The Cougars shot 43.8% from the field (28-64), and also connected on 15-18 attempts from the free throw line. The Cougars had a big advantage around the rim as they out rebounded the Mustangs 51-35 and also scored 44 of their 74 points from inside the paint.

Leading the way offensively for CCU was the outstanding play from both Kate Louthan and Ali Meyer. Louthan led all scorers on the night as she tallied 26 points and secured ten rebounds. Meyer scored 19 points in the game and was a force on the offensive and defensive glass as she grabbed 17 rebounds. Setting both of them up was the strong guard play from Taylor Torres. Torres dished out nine assists in the game.

Colorado Christian will be traveling back home as they look forward to their next game which is against Fort Lewis College on Friday January 8th in Lakewood, CO at the CCU Event Center. This will be their second matchup against the Skyhawks this year, as they will be looking for revenge as their previous matchup went to FLC in early December. Game time is scheduled to be at 5PM MST.
