Baseball Defeated by Eckerd

Colorado Christian faced off against Eckerd College on Friday night in the first game of their two game series. The Cougars could not hold off the Titans as they eventually fell by a final score of 10-3. CCU was unable to avoid the big inning as they gave up five runs in the eighth which sealed their fate in the game.

Jerry Gallegos got the baseball team off to a great start when he turned on a pitch and promptly delivered it over the right field fence for a homerun. Fans were still finding their seats, as Gallegos gave the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Eckerd answered back in the second inning as they were able to score two off of CCU starter Matt Weaver to take the lead 2-1. Weston Wiederhold provided the next set of fireworks for the Cougars as he tied the game up in the fourth inning as he led off with a towering homerun to left field.

Eckerd was able to get to Weaver in fourth as they scored three runs on four hits to re-take the lead by a score of 5-2. The score stayed the same until the seventh inning when CCU began their comeback efforts. Colorado Christian was able to get three hits in the inning which was capitalized with an opposite field RBI single off of the bat of Tyler Pollett which scored Bryce Brenton who had singled to lead off the inning.

Unfortunately, that was as close as the Cougars would come in the game as Eckerd was able to pull away late with a five run eighth inning. Despite the deficit, CCU continued to battle and put together good at bats in the ninth inning. They loaded the bases, but were unable to score.

Jerry Gallegos finished the game 2-4 with a homerun and RBI. Pete McWilliams also finished the game going 2-4 with a double. Matt Weaver took the loss for the Cougars as he went four innings allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out four. Daniel Bednarski was nearly perfect in his three innings of relief as he allowed only one hit and did not walk anyone while striking out three.

The loss drops their record to 2-4 on the year. They will be back in action tomorrow to face off with Eckerd College for their second, and final meeting of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 11AM MST.
