Cougar Offense Stalls in Two Losses

Softball played Florida Southern in St. Leo, FL on Friday afternoon walking away with two tough losses. The Mocs defeated the Cougars 4-1 in the first game, and then 10-5 in the second. CCU struggled on offense the entire day, which ultimately prevented them from catching any momentum in either game.

The first game was a slow offensive day on both sides. The Mocs jumped out first and scored three total runs in the second and third innings, only two of which were earned. They added another run in the sixth making the score 4-0. CCU was only able to put one on the board in the top of the seventh preventing the shut-out for Florida.

Tana Feiner picked up the loss pitching for the Cougs going six innings and giving up four runs, and only three earned runs. Feiner was solid throughout the game despite walking four Mocs and surrendering seven hits. Michaela Barr was the only bright spot this game with a pinch hit RBI single.

The second game had more Cougar action with CCU scoring five total runs, but still coming up short due to a damaging fifth inning by the Mocs offense.  Christian jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the third inning thanks to Moc mistakes in the field. Blue and gold scored on a single hit by Perry for the first run, and then scored three unearned runs after that due to a wild pitch and dropped fly.

After the third inning Colo. Christian went cold only scoring one more run in the game and striking out nine times. There were three different faces seen on the mound in this game starting with Shelby Diffenderfer, then Tana Feiner (L,1-4), and Jennie Winston closing. The Cougars didn't have much support on the defensive side making four errors and giving up four unearned runs.

"We faced a tough team tonight, but we are still making costly mistakes," says Coach Daven Bond. "With such a young team, we expected that it would take some time to come together, but it's time to start playing better. We continue to see some good things, but overall, we have a lot of work to do."

Softball will be playing their last preseason double header tomorrow vs Saint Leo University. First pitch will be at 10 AM MST.
