Game Recap: Softball |

Mavericks Fall, but Eagles Prevail

CCU opened their second week of conference play at Colorado Mesa University. It wasn't just Mesa that the Cougars would be playing throughout this weekend. CCU would also compete against Chadron State College. This is known as a POD, where three RMAC schools play against each other in two days. Colo. Christian was able to take game one from the Mavericks, who were ranked first place in the conference, 3-2. The second game ended in a loss for Christian 8-3 vs Chadron.

The Cougars were the first RMAC team to give Colorado Mesa a loss. Before coming into this weekend the Mavericks were 4-0 in conference after sweeping Fort Lewis in the opening games. CCU was split at 2-2 from their games against CSUP in Lakewood, CO last weekend.

Mesa started the scoring off in the bottom of the first inning with a home run from their catcher, Zoe Pakes. Pakes had a huge hit to left center that earned her two RBI. The Cougars were close to scoring in the second, but couldn't pull through having left three on base. It was an impressive effort from blue and gold in the field as they prevented the Mavericks from scoring the rest of the game. CMU had many connections with the ball, but the Cougars fielding was too strong to earn more runs.

At the time CCU had not known it, but they had won the game in the top of the fourth inning. There were two strike outs and two on base when Cougar freshman Charlotte Romero stepped up to the plate. Romero crushed the ball over the fence earning her second home run of the season. She ran in Hanna Farmer and Amy Edison for three RBI and giving them the win at 3-2.

Despite CCU's 10 strike-outs at the plate in this game, it was the one long ball that made the difference. Letty Valenzuela was consistent hitting 2-4, and Hanna Farmer went 1-4 with one run.

"We played a good game against Mesa," said head coach Daven Bond.  "It was great pitching, solid defense and some timely hitting. Charlotte came up big for us again and Tana was really good today. She gives us a chance every time she pitches."

Tana Feiner did do a great job on the mound vs the Mavericks. Feiner played all seven innings, and only gave up three hits and two runs, striking out three.

Coach Bond continued in saying that "The second game was disappointing. We weren't aggressive at the plate and our pitchers left too many balls over the plate. We are still searching for the elusive two solid games in a day. We continue to show signs of a great team but are too inconsistent to put a string of wins together."

Game two against the Chadron State Eagles ended with CCU being down five runs 8-3. The Cougs were the first to score in the top of the first inning. Letty Valenzuela singled up the middle running in Hanna Farmer. Valenzuela would go on to earn another RBI in the top of the sixth running in Rylee Halenar. The second run was scored off of freshman catcher Gabby Rinker's double hit to left field. Shortstop Stephanie Tatham was able to cross the plate.

CCU scored three runs throughout the game, while the Eagles had eight on the scoreboard by the bottom of the third inning. Blue and gold was not able to pull through offensively or defensively ending the game in a loss.

Fortunately the Cougars will be seeing both Colorado Mesa and Chadron State again on Sunday Feb. 28th. First game will be against the Eagles starting at 11 am MST.
