The Colorado Christian baseball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday morning as they defeated Warner University by a final score of 7-5 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the two teams. Mother Nature did not cooperate for the second contest, as the game was eventually called in the fourth inning due to poor playing conditions. It was unfortunate for CCU as they had a 6-1 lead in the second game, but all in all the day was a success for the Cougars.
Â
Warner jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Cougs after three innings, but tallied one in the fourth inning, and three in the top half of the sixth inning to give them a 4-3 lead. Their advantage was short lived as the Royals scored two in the bottom half of the sixth to regain the lead 5-4. CCU answered back in the seventh with one run and then put the game away in the eighth with two runs to secure themselves the 7-5 victory.

Head coach
Gregg Mucerino spoke about the victory after the game, "We played well in the first game and fought hard to get the win.
Marcus Graves had a huge pinch hit single in the eighth inning which drove in two and gave us the lead.
Mike Marlar came in and slammed the door getting the last six outs of the game and giving up only one hit. It was too bad that weather shortened the second game because we were swinging the bats well and had built up a five run lead."
Â
Ryan Erazo started the first game and finished with five innings allowing only three hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out three. He did a great job of keeping the ball low in the zone as he was able to induce 10 ground balls for outs, compared to just two fly balls.
Lukas Jorgensen picked up the win for CCU while going two innings giving up just one hit and striking out three.
Mike Marlar finished the game and got the save as he went two innings allowing only the one hit and struck out two.
Â
Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Jerry Gallegos,
Austin Atkerson, and
Weston Wiederhold. Gallegos finished the first game going 2-4 with one RBI. Atkerson, went 1-4 but his hit was a homerun which drove in two. Wiederhold also finished the game 2-4 with one RBI.
Marcus Graves delivered the game winner in the eighth inning with a two out single which drove in the deciding two runs in the game.
Â
The Cougars will be off on Sunday but will return to action on Monday evening when they face off against Palm Beach Atlantic University. First pitch is scheduled for 4PM MST.
