Colorado Christian Men's Basketball ended their conference season in the RMAC, and moved on to the NCCAA post-season. The NCCAA Central Region Tournament was being hosted by CCU, which allowed the Cougars a home court advantage. The Cougs were seated #2 allowing them a first round bye. The night before, Central Baptist College defeated Ecclesia College advancing them to the semi-finals against Colorado. CCU would be defeated by one point 80-79 ending their season, and giving them an overall record of 14-14.
CCU would come out on the court firing on all cylinders taking the lead and keeping it all the way until the last two minutes of the first half. The Mustangs trailed right being the Cougars until three seconds were on the clock going into halftime. A successful jumper by CBC, and a CCU foul tied the game up at 37. First half shooting percentages for Christian were 46% from the field, 27% three, and 73% from the line. The Mustangs led from downtown shooting 30%.
CCU's
Dimitri Saliba and
Isaiah Hanson ran the court against the Mustangs. Saliba led in scoring with 17 points (4-5 FG, 1-1 3FG) and had seven assists. Hanson played 34 minutes and scored 16 going 7-17 and 2-8 3FG.
Wayne McCullough led defensively with nine rebounds and 13 points.
Central Baptist and Colorado Christian battled in the second half. The Mustangs outshot Christian from the three, but the Cougs stayed clean and consistent from the field. While the Mustangs shot from beyond the arc (14-37), CCU's game plan consisted of more paint presence having double the amount than CBC with 42. This caused the game to be as close as close can be.
With three minutes on the clock, CCU led CBC by two points 77-75. The Stangs tied it up again at 77-77, but a visitor foul and a couple of made free throws from Saliba had the Cougs on top again. Central grabbed the ball off a blue and gold turnover and banked a three with 40 seconds, giving them the advantage 80-79. 30 seconds were left, and the Cougs would score two more, but ended the game one point short.
The Men's Basketball team and CCU Athletics would like to thank
Wayne McCullough for his dedication to the team and department. McCullough will be graduating this spring, and leaving CCU as a decorated and honored athlete with many accomplishments on and off the court.
