Baseball Suffers Tough Loss

Despite dominating the game for eight innings, the Cougars were victims of a walk off homerun against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday and fell by a final score of 3-2. It was the final game of a four game series in which CCU was swept by the Orediggers.

Colorado Christian jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Pete McWilliams which drove in Brandon Hesselberg who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Cougars added to their lead in the third inning when Bryce Brenton singled to right field which brought in Austin Atkerson and made it a 2-0 lead. Then both pitching staffs took over the game and shut both offenses down.

Ryan Erazo had the start for CCU in the game and had his best start of the year. Mines could not figure him out as he took a no hitter into the sixth inning. Erazo lost his no-hit bid with one out in the sixth, but quickly regained his composure and went on another run. He did not allow another hit until the leadoff hitter in the ninth inning. After the leadoff single, he then surrendered another single to put the tying run on base. Mines executed a sacrifice bunt which pushed the runners into scoring position. That brought up Oredigger slugger Nate Olinger. Olinger promptly delivered on the first pitch as he hit a homerun to right center field to give his team the 3-2 victory.

Colorado Christian outhit Mines 11-4 on the day, but it was not enough to give them the win against the conference opponent. Jerry Gallegos, Weston Wiederhold, and Ben Gooch all had two hits in the game.

The Cougars will be back in action next weekend (Mar. 18-20) when they will face off against Metro State at home. First pitch for the game on Friday is set for 12PM MST.
