CCU Softball Claws One Win

CCU Softball went one and one vs the Adams State Grizzles on Sunday, March 13th. The Cougs won the a.m. game 13-11, but were defeated in the afternoon final 14-11. The Cougars are now 6-19 on the year, and 5-10 in the RMAC.

With a combined total of 24 runs on the day, blue and gold did an outstanding job on offense, being led by CCU's second baseman Charlotte Romero who went 5-6, with a whopping eight RBI's, and three runs. Romero has been a huge part of the Cougars success and continues to play consistent every weekend.

The Grizzlies' were lighting it up at the plate as well, scoring 25 runs in the last two games of the series. CCU had 17 hits in the game one, and 12 in game two. Letty Valenzuela had a home run in the second inning in game one, and she came up second for the Cougs overall in RBI's with seven, going 5-8 at the plate, and scoring one run. The Cougars had two triples in game one, which is the first time this season. Gabby Rinker tripled to right field in the bottom of the sixth, and Kristina Billante to left field in the first.

The victory was needed for blue and gold, and most of their scoring was in the second and third frames putting seven runs up in the second, and then five in the third. After a daunting fifth and sixth innings, where the Grizzlies scored nine runs, CCU was able to put one more on the scoreboard ending the game 13-11.

Tana Feiner ended her weekend with the win (6-9). Feiner pitched all seven innings, giving up 12 hits, 11 runs, eight of which were earned, and striking out seven ASU hitters.

The second game was a battle for the lead. CCU started off scoring one run in the first, but then ASU had seven in the second. Blue and gold swapped pitchers taking Shelby Diffenderfer out after one out in the second, and putting Jennie Winston on the mound.  The Cougs retaliated in the second and third putting eight more on the scoreboard. CCU was now up 9-7 going into the fourth inning. After one out in the bottom of the third, ASU would put in Madisen Vrabel to pitch. Vrabel did her job defensively for the Grizzlies by preventing the Cougs from scoring no more than four runs. Vrabel earned her first win of the season against CCU. Adams would go on to dominate at the plate in the last three innings with two doubles and two singles, and a home run, winning them the game 14-11.

Many CCU players hit well on the day including Hanna Farmer who went 5-9 with three RBI's and four runs. Kristina Billante scored the team high of five runs hitting 2-4 with one RBI, and being walked four times. Gabby Rinker had nine at bats with four hits and two runs. Rylee Halenar and Stephanie Tatham both had an RBI for the Cougs, and contributed a combined five runs, and four hits.

The Cougars will be local next weekend, March 19th and 20th vs Regis State University. Saturday's double header is set for 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
