Game Recap: Softball |

Rangers Roll Over Cougars

CCU Softball headed into their 5th conference series games against Regis University. This puts the Cougs exactly halfway through RMAC play. Sunday would be the first day of the series due to weather conditions, giving the Rangers and Cougars an extra day of practice. The Regis Rangers would defeat CCU on day one 3-2 and then in game two 9-5.

Game one was heartbreaking for blue and gold because they were up for most of the game until the 6th inning when the Regis Rangers would score a third run winning the series opener 3-2.

CCU jumped out strong scoring two runs, one in the first frame, and then another in the second. Charlotte Romero would single up the middle, giving Hanna Farmer the first run of the day. The next run was of huge importance because it was CCU senior and left fielder, Rylee Halenar's first career home run at Colorado Christian. Halenar crushed the ball over the right field fence. Blue and gold led the game 2-0.

Regis would put their first run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, and then their second in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougs battled every frame, trying to make the gap larger, but struggled to reach home plate. On the mound was CCU's starting pitcher Tana Feiner who only gave up five hits, two earned runs, and four strikeouts. Feiner did a great job throughout the game, but the sixth inning was devastating for CCU, where the Ranger's had three of their five total hits, allowing one more run to win the game.

Game two had its ups and downs for Colorado Christian, but ended with another Ranger victory. RU started the game off with a vicious scoring summary earning five runs in the first frame including a two RBI home run, and a Cougar error. It wasn't until the top of the fifth that blue and gold would spring into action scoring two runs off a Carly Perry single, one run from Letty Valenzuela's single hit, and then the last run of the frame from a wild pitch.  CCU would end the fifth inning with one on base, having four hits, and four runs making the score 5-4.

Regis University would strike back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Christian struggled defensively having three errors in the game, and giving the Rangers two unearned runs. The Cougars would score one more run in the top of the seventh. Jennie Winston pitched 5.2 innings giving up nine hits, and seven earned runs. CCU's outfielder, Michaela Barr was seen on the mound for a short .1 innings, giving up one hit. The duo had no strikeouts and walked two. Regis had ten hits, and CCU had nine with five strikeouts.

"I love this team!" said head coach Daven Bond. "They work so hard and are just not getting any breaks. They have good attitudes and show up everyday expecting to win. We are so close to being a tournament team, but keep falling short. These girls are learning some tough lessons every weekend and it will pay off. We do a lot of really good things every game, but can't seem to pull it all together. I expect a lot of fight tomorrow!"

Game day leaders for the Cougs were Charlotte Romero who hit 5-7 with one run and one RBI. Hanna Farmer went 4-7 scoring three runs, and Carly Perry had two RBI's with one run and one hit. Letty Valenzuela hit 3-6 with one RBI, and then the single home run of the day by CCU senior Rylee Halenar.
CCU Softball will be playing at Regis University for the last two games in their series on Monday, March 21st. Game times are 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
