Michaela Barr had a tremendous day as her and the rest of the Cougars won both ends of the doubleheader on Thursday. CCU won game one against UCCS by a final score of 14-10, and followed that with a 3-2 walk-off win against Western New Mexico University. Barr finished the day with a combined seven hits, and seven RBI on the day.
Â
Game One: In their first game of the day, Colorado Christian got off to a shaky start against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. UCCS began the game by scoring four runs in the first and second innings.
Michaela Barr began her day early as she started the comeback attempt in the second inning as she hit her first of three homeruns on the day. Her second inning shot scored
Letty Valenzuela, but after two innings the outcome still seemed bleak as CCU was trailing 8-2.
Â
Barr struck again in the fourth inning as she hit a solo homerun, her second of the day, to bring the Cougars within five. Three more runs were added in the fifth inning by CCU as they continued to pour it on offensively. UCCS scored one in their half of the fifth inning, but the momentum quickly shifted back towards the Lady Cougars as they continued their attack in the sixth inning. Â
Â
Carly Perry got the scoring going in the sixth as she ripped a double to right field which scored
Kristina Billante, and
Hanna Farmer to cut their deficit down to just one run. That brought up
Michaela Barr and she crushed her third homerun of the day to right field, which drove in Perry, and gave the Lady Cougars their first lead of the day 10-9. The scoring continued in the sixth as they scored four more runs highlighted by a bases loaded double off the bat of
Kristina Billante which brought all three runners in to score. When all was said and done, they had scored eight runs in the inning and took a 14-9 lead. UCCS scored once in the seventh, but that was it as Colorado Christian held on to win by a final score of 14-10.
Â
Game Two:In the second game, CCU faced off against Western New Mexico University.
Letty Valenzuela got the Cougs off on the right foot as she put them on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning which scored
Charlotte Romero. The Mustangs evened the score with a run in their half of the second inning, and the score remained tied 1-1 until Valenzuela came up in the fourth inning. She hammered a solo homerun to left field which gave them a one run lead. They held that lead until the Lady Cougars were one out away from securing the victory. WNMU tied the game, but were unable to get anything else, which brought the Cougars up to the plate needing just one run to earn their second victory of the game.
Â
Charlotte Romero got the bottom of the seventh started as she singled to left field.
Carly Perry followed with a single of her own which allowed Romero to move to second.
Letty Valenzuela nearly ended the game, but her line drive was snagged by the third baseman to record the out. That brought up
Michaela Barr, and just like the first game, she was able to deliver. Barr singled, which allowed both runners to advance, which forced an error by the centerfielder and allowed Romero to score the winning run.
Â
The doubleheader sweep improves the Cougars record to 8-26 overall, and 7-15 in conference play. They will be back in action on Friday as they will have another doubleheader against the same teams. Game one will be against Western New Mexico University and the first pitch will be at 12PM. CCU will take on UCCS in the second game, with first pitch tentatively scheduled for 2PM MST.
