Colorado Christian took on Adams State on Friday afternoon as they played the final two games of their four game conference series. The Grizzlies took both ends of the doubleheader as they won game one 11-4, and game two by a final score of 11-8 in extra innings.
Game One: The first game of the day was a battle back and forth between the two teams as neither one was able to seize and maintain control of the momentum. Adams State fired the first shot of the game as they broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring one run to take the early advantage. The Cougars retaliated in their half of the fourth inning as they produced three runs, highlighted by a single off the bat of
Jack Nelson which drove in
Bryce Brenton and
Austin Atkerson. Unfortunately, the rest of the game belonged to Adams State as they scored 10 runs in the final five innings, compared to just one scored by Colorado Christian.
Jack Nelson finished the game 1-3 with two RBI.
Weston Wiederhold also had an RBI as he went 1-3 with a run scored.
Austin Atkerson exercised good patience in the game as he went 1-2 but also drew two walks and set the table for the hitters behind him.
Game Two:The second game was a shaky start as Adams State jumped out to an early lead after they scored three runs in the first two innings. It could have been much worse, but Colorado Christian did a great job of limiting the amount of damage taken by leaving five Grizzlies on base in the first two frames. After scoring one in the first inning, the Cougars opened it up a bit in the third and tallied three runs to give them the 4-3 lead. The lead did not last long, as Adams answered with four more runs in the fourth inning to lead 7-3. From that point on, the comeback attempt was in full effect as
Mike Marlar kept the Grizzlies in check with a masterful performance out of the bullpen. Marlar, who normally closes games for the team, came in to relieve starter
Alex Ginn in the fourth inning. He kept them scoreless for his final four innings of work and allowed the offense to get back in the game. Colorado Christian scored once in the fifth, and twice in the sixth inning to tie the game up.
Neither team was able to push a run across in the seventh inning, which sent the game into extras. CCU had their chances to win late as they were able to create baserunners, but was unable to collect the clutch hit they needed to get the victory. The scoring draught was ended in the 10
th as the Grizzlies scored four times which was more than enough to seal the Cougars Fate.
Jerry Gallegos crushed a solo homerun to right center field in the bottom half of the 10
th, but that was as close as they would get as they lost by the final score of 11-8. Gallegos finished the game going 2-5 with the homerun and two runs scored.
Branden Amenta was the other Colorado Christian player who had multiple hits in the second game as he also finished 2-5 with two RBI.
The Cougars will be back in action April 1-3 as they will be taking on CSU-Pueblo down in Pueblo. The opening game of the series on Friday will be under the lights, as the first pitch is scheduled for 6PM MST.
