Game 1
Â
After a bottom seven, down two runs with two outs, walk-off single victory 6-5 over New Mexico Highlands on Saturday afternoon, the Cougars momentum was sky high. They did it again on Sunday morning against the Cowgirls 9-1 in five innings.
Â
This game was more comfortable than the previous one vs NMHU, as the Cougars had control in the field and at the plate through five innings. Â CCU had 12 hits, nine RBI's, and only one strike out in the game.
Â
The Cougs were off to a good start in the first frame scoring from a
Carly Perry (2 RBI's) homer to center field, running in
Charlotte Romero. Highlands had a homer of their own in the top of the third making the score 2-1 CCU going into the fourth frame.
Â
Blue and gold became unstoppable in the fourth inning scoring seven runs off eight hits. It was one hack after the other starting with a
Stephanie Tatham single to center field. Tatham then scored a run off of
Kristina Billante's (1 RBI) double to right center.
Charlotte Romero (2 RBI's) then singled to left field running in Farmer and Billante. Romero was able to advance to second off an error by the Cowgirls, and then score from a
Letty Valenzuela (1 RBI) single down the left field line.
Â
The scoring continued with a huge single up the middle from
Hayley Novacek (1 RBI), running in Valenzuela, and then last but not least
Amy Edison (2 RBI's) had another hard hit double to left field allowing Novacek and
Michaela Barr to score. The Cougars shut down Highlands in the top of the fifth ending the game on a run rule 9-1.
Â
Tana Feiner (8-14) was on the mound for the Lady Cougs and threw a hard game shutting down N.M. Highlands offense giving up four hits, one walk, one run, and striking out three.
Â
Game 2
Â
The Cougars put up a great fight against the #1 Mavericks being up at one point in the game by one run, but then losing in the end 15-9.
Â
CCU and CMU both scored runs in the first inning. CMU came up with one run in the top, and the Cougs came out with two runs in the bottom. The Mavericks would go on a scoring rally getting seven runs in the next two innings, so that the Cougs were now down 8-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Â
A series of fielding errors by Mesa's squad gave CCU two runs by
Rylee Halenar and
Stephanie Tatham. The next two runs were from a
Carly Perry single to right field that allowed Billante and Farmer to reach home plate. The score was now 8-6 CMU. Third baseman,
Letty Valenzuela stepped up to the plate and hit a timely home run to left field getting 3 RBI's and running in
Carly Perry and
Charlotte Romero. The inning ended once the Mavericks reentered their ace, Mackenzie Surface on the mound. CCU had now taken the lead at 9-8.
Â
Surface (15-3) was able to prevent blue and gold from scoring the rest of the game. While the Cougs were stalled at the plate, the CCU pitching squad did their best to defend their lead, but gave up one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and four in the seventh.
Jennie Winston walked away with the loss (1-10) pitching 2.1 innings. There were a couple of errors by the Cougs in the fifth and sixth innings that allowed for three unearned runs.
Â
Despite the loss, there was some amazing at bats by
Charlotte Romero who went 3-3, with two runs, and bumped her batting average up to .503 on the season.
Kristina Billante went 1-5 with one run and one RBI.
