Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept on the Day

The Cougars squared off on Saturday against CSU-Pueblo in games two and three of their four game series. Despite furious late inning comeback attempts in each game, CCU lost both, as the final in game one was 7-5, and game two final was 10-9.

Game One:
Game one favored Pueblo for the majority of it, but the Cougars made it interesting in the last inning as they scored five runs, and brought the tying run up to the plate, but ran out of time as CSU-Pueblo held on for the 7-5 victory.

CCU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, and Jerry Gallegos promptly unloaded them with a bases clearing double which brought the team within three runs as they only trailed 7-4. Pete McWilliams followed with a double of his own which scored Gallegos from second and brought the deficit down to two. Austin Atkerson came up next with a chance to tie the game, but flied out to right field to end game one.

Jerry Gallegos collected three hits in the game as he finished 3-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Branden Amenta added another multi-hit game as he went 2-3 with a run scored.

Game Two:
Colorado Christian jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after scoring in their half of the first inning. However, much like yesterday, CSUP poured it on over the first two innings as they scored three in the first, and five in the second to take an 8-1 lead going into the third inning. CCU began to chip away at the deficit in the third inning as they scored three runs highlighted by a 2RBI double off the bat of Branden Amenta which scored Del Richardson and Brandon Hesselberg who had both reached leading off the inning. Still trailing by four, the Cougars completed their comeback attempt and tied the game 8-8. Amenta was in the middle again as he singled in the first run in the fifth, then Pete McWilliams drove in the other three when he sent a ball sailing over the left field fence for his second homerun of the year.

Pueblo scored one in their half of the fifth and also added a run in the sixth inning which gave them a two run lead heading into the final inning. After two quick outs, McWilliams stepped back into the box and once again delivered as he smashed his second homerun of the game to bring the team within one. Austin Atkerson followed that up with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. Unfortunately it was not meant to be, as a groundball to third ended the game.

It was a great team effort offensively, as they never gave up even after staring at a big deficit early on in the game. Pete McWilliams and Branden Amenta were offensive juggernauts as they ended with eight of the nine RBI for the team in the game. McWilliams went 2-4 with two homeruns and five RBI. While Amenta finished 3-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

The team will be back in action on Sunday as they will be taking on CSU-Pueblo for the fourth and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM MST.
