What began as a pitcher's duel, quickly turned into an offensive slugfest between CCU and CSU-Pueblo in the final game of their four game series. In the end, the Cougars came out on top by a final score of 12-8. The 12 run outburst is a new season high for Colorado Christian, as their previous high was nine.
Â
CSUP jumped out to an early lead in the game as they scored a single run in the first inning. The Cougs could not figure out the Thunderwolves pitching as they were held scoreless until the sixth inning. Pueblo added two more runs to give them a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning, but then CCU began their offensive onslaught.
Bryce Brenton got the scoring underway as he hit a sacrifice fly to score
Pete McWilliams who had walked earlier in the inning. In the seventh inning, the Cougars unleashed on the CSUP pitching staff and seized control of the game.
Jerry Gallegos tied the game up with a two RBI single which drove in Del Richardson and
Brandon Hesselberg. A couple of batters later,
Ben Gooch gave CCU the lead with a single that drove in Gallegos and
Branden Amenta. The hit parade continued as
Bryce Brenton got in on the action by hitting a triple, which brought Gooch and Atkerson in to score.
Tyler Pollett followed that with a double to drive in Brenton. The scoring was finished off by a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Branden Amenta. When all the dust settled, CCU had scored eight runs on six hits and took a commanding 9-3 lead over CSUP.
Â
Pueblo answered in their half of the seventh inning as they hit a three run homerun which brought them back to within three. The Cougars would not let them get any closer than that though as they continued to pile it on by adding three more runs in the eighth inning.
Pete McWilliams,
Austin Atkerson, and
Tyler Pollett all had RBI hits in the eighth which extended the CCU out to 12-6. The Thunderwolves added two more runs in the eighth, but were shut down in the ninth inning by
Daniel Bednarski to seal the 12-8 victory.
Â
Offensively, Colorado Christian had four players finish the game with multi-hits.
Jerry Gallegos went 3-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Ben Gooch went 2-5 with two RBI and one run scored.
Austin Atkerson and
Tyler Pollett both finished 2-4 on the day. Every CCU starter had at least one hit in the game, and seven of the nine also had at least one RBI. All-around, it was the best offensive game for the team on the year.
Â
The win improves the Cougars record to 8-25 overall, and 3-17 in conference play. They will be back in action next weekend (Apr. 8-10) as they will face off against Regis University at Regis. First pitch for the game on Friday April 8
