Game Recap: Softball |

Game One Victory, but Error Full Game Two

CCU Softball split with Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon. The Cougs won the 12 o'clock game 5-3, and then was defeated by the Orediggers 12-7 in the second game of the series.

Game 1

Game one was a simple win for Christian scoring timely runs, and holding the Orediggers to only seven hits. The Cougs were led by sophomore pitcher Tana Feiner who struck out three, and had no earned runs against her. Every run Mines scored was unearned due to a single fielding error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Feiner pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits, and walked two.

The first two innings were silent for both teams, but the Cougs were able to score one run in the top of the third off of a combination of a fielding error by CSM's right fielder, and a single hit by Letty Valenzuela. Carly Perry reached base on the error and advanced to third, and then Valenzuela's hit gave Perry and CCU the run.

The following inning (4), Kristina Billante hit a home run to right field earning two RBI's, running in herself and Stephanie Tatham. The Orediggers retaliated with three unearned runs of their own in the bottom fourth. The winning hit for Colorado Christian was in the fifth frame with two outs, but CCU senior, Stephanie Tatham doubled to left center and allowed Rylee Halenar and Letty Valenzuela to score. CCU would go on to win the game 5-3 by shutting down Mines offense at the plate.

Game 2

The Cougs momentum rolled hard into the second game giving them four runs in the first inning. Everyone was able to get on base starting with a bunt by Hanna Farmer. Kristina Billante then doubled to left center, and Charlotte Romero was hit by a pitch. Bases loaded and Carly Perry doubles down the left field line getting two RBI's and running in Farmer and Billante. Letty Valenzuela then singled to right field running in Romero and Perry. The inning ended after this scoring summary with three consecutive outs, but Christian had a comfortable lead of 4-0.

CSM scored one run in the first frame, and then the Cougars had their fifth run in the top of the second off another Carly Perry single hit. Mines started to close the gap in the second scoring three more runs making the score 5-4. The third inning was uneventful, but the fourth was another single run inning for blue and gold putting them ahead 6-4.

At this point, everything was under control for CCU, but then a series of miserable throwing errors (four) caused the Orediggers to take the lead with four hits, 8-6. The Lady Cougs could not recover from this inning, and Colorado School of Mines would go on to win the game 12-7. CCU totaled seven errors, allowing for five unearned runs, and ran through three pitchers with Diffenderfer taking the loss (3-9).
The Cougars will be back at Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, April 24th for a doubleheader starting at 11:00 am.
