Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Regis

CCU played a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Regis, but were unable to come away with a victory in either one as they lost game one 7-1, and game two by a 5-0 final score. The Regis pitching staff was able to hold the Cougars offense in check during both games on the day.Colorado Christian is now 8-28 on the year, and 3-20 in conference play.

Game One:
Regis scored early and often to begin game one as they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after just two innings of play. Tom Sigrist came in to relieve Matt Weaver and he was able to hold the Rangers offense in check as he pitched three innings and allowed just one run on four hits. Owen Harris and Matt Fontneau pitched the final 1 2/3rds inning and kept the Rangers off the board as they gave up just one hit combined between the two of them.

The Cougars were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Jerry Gallegos had an RBI groundout which scored Chance Richardson who had doubled to lead off the inning. Unfortunately, that was the only offense CCU was able to muster as they ended up losing by a final score of 7-1.

Brandon Hesselberg finished the day 2-2 with a walk and was also hit by a pitch. He has been a magnet for the ball as he has now been hit 21 times on the year, which is leading the nation. Hesselberg is now hitting a team high .362 on the season.

Game Two:
Once again Regis jumped out to an early lead as they scored twice in the first inning, which ended up being all of the run support that they needed in the game. CCU was stifled by the Rangers pitching staff, as they only managed seven hits in the game, all of which were singles.

Danny Graves pitched well, but defensively the Cougars were unable to help him out as they committed five errors in the game. Graves went five innings and gave up six hits and five runs, but only two of those runs were earned. Michael Cantrell came in and worked a perfect sixth inning and struck out one.

The team will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the final game of their four game series with Regis. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM MST.
