Game Recap: Softball |

Walk-off Win for CCU

It was a great ending to a long day for the Colorado Christian University Softball team. The Cougs dropped game one against Colorado Mesa 8-0, but then pulled off a clutch win against New Mexico Highlands with a walk off single, winning the game 6-5.

Game 1

The Cougars faced off against the 26-1 Colorado Mesa Mavericks first thing Saturday morning at Lakewood Park. CCU boasted the single victory over CMU this RMAC season earlier in the year on the Mavericks home field.

Colorado Mesa only seemed to get stronger as a team, and more efficient at the plate since the last time the Cougs saw them. The Mavericks totaled 15 hits against CCU in seven innings with their ace, McKenzie Surface (13-3) on the mound. In seven innings Surface allowed three hits, with four strikeouts, and one walk.

Charlotte Romero is the Lady Cougs stronghold. The freshman from Santa Clarita Valley, CA not only leads the Cougars in hitting, but also the entire conference. Currently, Romero is first in the RMAC in batting average with .485, first in hits with 65, and first in doubles at 16.  Against Mesa, Romero had two of the Cougs three hits, going 2-3 at the plate.

Game 2

In game two, CCU competed against the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands. NMHU fell to the Mavericks as well on day one in their first game 6-3, and then also to the Cougars in the afternoon game 6-5.

CCU started down by one run going into the bottom of the third, but equalized the game off an error by the Cowgirls. Hanna Farmer scored off a throwing error from the catcher to second base who was trying to catch Carly Perry stealing. The score was 1-1 until a devastating ball was missed in the outfield in the fifth frame, and Highlands scored two runs, and another off a single hit. Now it was 4-1 going into bottom five.

The Cougs grinded through the next three innings scoring one run in the fifth from a sac fly by Carly Perry, running in Hanna Farmer. NMHU got another one on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth and CCU stayed down 5-2 going into bottom seven.

What a rally from the Lady Cougars! It was the perfect set-up for success. Hanna Farmer led off for CCU, and everyone got on base. Kristina Billante scored run three off another Carly Perry single hit. Then the fourth run was off another error by the Cowgirls allowing Charlotte Romero to advance home. CCU was down one 5-4 with two outs. Rylee Halenar stepped up to the plate and was walked. Bases loaded as Amy Edison approached the batter's box. Edison's hard hit single through the middle won the game for blue and gold running in Hailey Riesenmy and Carly Perry, and winning the game 6-4.

The Cougars had 10 hits and five RBI's. Carly Perry led CCU going 2-3, with one run, and three RBI's. Hanna Farmer scored two runs. Kristina Billante and Charlotte Romero both went 2-4 with one run, and then Amy Edison won the game going 1-3, with two RBI's.

CCU split on the day and will be back at Lakewood Park on Sunday, April 10th to face off against NMHU at 10:00 am and then Colorado Mesa at 2:00 PM.
