Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Finishes 3-1 at TexANN Invite

On day two the Cougars defeated Texas A&M-Commerce in four sets, but then lost to host school, Tarleton State in four.

Game 1:
The Cougars morning game was against Texas A&M-Commerce, where they won in four sets 25-13, 25-21, 16-25, and 25-20. CCU went into the game confident from a first day sweep in the tournament, and Commerce had split the day before.

The first two sets were clean on the Cougars side of the court, hitting .194 and .250. It was pressure from blue and gold's end line that caused a major offensive struggled in the Lions front row. TAMUC hit negative in the first set, and then .061 in the second with a combined total of 18 kills and 17 errors. In between sets there must have been a mental shift among the Texas team because when they came out in the third set they gave CCU a run for their money.

The tables turned in the third set and CCU struggled on the net hitting .088 while the Lions dominated with 12 kills at .357%. Commerce kept the lead the whole 25 points and won 25-16.

Colo. Christian made the appropriate adjustments on the court in set four and saw good performances from outside hitters Mollie Bailey and Cali Bahnsen. Bailey got six kills and Bahnsen had two with no errors and eight attempts in the fourth set. Christian pulled the win off 25-20.

Stat Leaders:
#5 OPP. Sophia Proano with 13 kills and three blocks, followed by #9 OH Mollie Bailey who had nine kills and 12 digs. Sporting the libero jersey was freshman #17 Mariela Gonzalez who totaled 19 digs for the Cougs, and starting setter #18 Kylee Wurster had five of the 11 aces from Christian.

Game 2:
Colorado Christian finished the TexANN Invite against the host school Tarleton State University. CCU lost to TSU in four sets winning the opening set 26-24, but then dropping the next three 19-25, 25-27, and 15-25.

The two teams were evenly matched as two sets went into extra points. Both coaches utilized their reserves to the max, trying to find a way to win. Statistically, Tarleton was one step ahead the whole match. Even in the third set, where Christian almost pulled of the win, the Texans put down three more kills, one more block, and five more digs.

Head Coach Andria Harshman stated:

"It was a tough match. Both sides played well. Overall, this weekend was better than last and we are making improvements going 3-1 instead of 2-2 like in Irvine. We are ready for conference play next weekend and excited to be at home."

Stat Leaders:
TSU's outside hitter #2 Hailey Roberts put 22 balls down on CCU's side, and had 18 digs. Roberts was named AVCA 1st team All-American in 2015.

For the Cougs, right side Sophia Proano had 16 kills and four blocks. Proano led in kills every match this tournament totaling 67 over the weekend. Senior outside hitter, Mollie Bailey had an outstanding match earning a double-double with 17 digs (team high) and 14 kills. Freshman outside hitter #1 Cali Bahnsen earned 12 kills, and setter #18 Kylee Wurster had five kills, 13 digs, and 49 assists.

Hope Baldrica and Sophia Proano were named All-Tournament Team, which was voted on by all the present schools coaches.
