Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Edged by TAMIU

Colorado Christian was beaten by Texas A&M International University by a final score of 2-1. It was a tough loss, as CCU had an early lead, but a stretch of unfortunate luck in the second half ultimately cost them the game.

The Cougars got the game going quickly, as they struck first early in the half. In the 14th minute, Sam Walbearer lined up to take a free kick from about 30 yards out following a foul on TAMIU. Walbearer sent a ball towards the goal where teammate Genaro Arellano was able to get his head on it and sneak it past the Dust Devil goalkeeper. It marks the first goal in the collegiate career for Arellano. The Cougs played solid defense throughout the half, and were able to maintain their 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of the half, the team did everything they could to hold onto the lead, but bad luck struck in the 57th minute. While attempting to clear a ball out of the zone, a bad bounce hit the hand of a Christian defender while he was still inside the box, leading to a penalty kick for TAMIU. Despite his best effort, goalkeeper Brandon Eide was unable to stop the attempt, and the score was tied 1-1.

With just over six minutes remaining in the game, it appeared to be a stalemate which was heading for overtime, but the Dust Devils had other plans. TAMIU forward Ryan Hodgson stole the ball deep in the Cougar zone and had a breakaway towards the goal. Brandon Eide deflected the shot, but it still snuck in the corner of the net for the deciding goal.

The loss drops the Cougars to 0-2-0 on the year. The team hits the road for their next two games as they are traveling up to Washington. They take the field Thursday September 8th and will be taking on Seattle Pacific University. They will be playing under the lights as the game time is at 8PM MST.
