Colorado Christian Women's Basketball was defeated by Colorado Mesa University 103-72. The Mavericks overpowered blue and gold in a show stopping, offensive performance that wowed the whole conference.
Â
The Lady Cougs had an impressive first quarter against Colorado Mesa. Every area of their game was cohesive as the Cougar squad put up early buckets and took the lead. CCU junior
Kaitlyn Hinch started the game off with two threes and scored eight points total in the quick ten minutes. Teammates
Alex Nelson had
Mikala Gordon both had five points. In the final minutes of the quarter, the very disciplined CMU squad adjusted to the pace of the game and tied it up 20-20.
Â
The Mavericks proved themselves at the end of the first with some quick trigger buckets; nothing that the Cougars couldn't handle, but they crumbled completely in the second quarter as Mesa gained momentum. The Cougs did not score a single point until five minutes into the second. Looking back, this was the point in the game where the Cougars let it go. Mesa scored nine points in those five minutes and created a deficit of 29-20. Christian had to go into double overtime to close the gap, but their efforts were futile.
Â
The three Cougars mentioned earlier: Hinch, Nelson, and Gordon played a great game. Hinch scored 17, Nelson 18, and Gordon came out with 20 points and nine rebounds. They worked hard, but it seemed impossible to gain the lead when Mesa had players dropping three left and right. CMU's #4 Bryanna Adams had 28 points going 7-10 from three, #15 Jaylyn Duran went 4-4 3FG, and several other players shot 2-2, 3-3, 3-5; all from downtown. The Mavericks went 20-27 on the arc, a whopping 74%, and 37-60 FG, 62%. This was the highest scoring game that the RMAC has seen this season and close to the record books.
