After an exciting game against the Beavers of Bemidji State University, CCU Women's Basketball claimed their first victory of the season with a final score of 72-68. Coming off of a tough loss the night before and a three game losing streak, the Cougars were due for a win and they did not disappoint.
Bemidji held the lead the entire first half, outscoring the Cougars by ten which left CCU with only 29 points. Coming into the second half with a new fire, CCU outscored the Beavers by fourteen with 43 points to seal the win. The Cougars took a new approach to the game by starting three freshman compared to their normal start of only one.
The final quarter kept everyone on their toes, with leads changing and every score going point for point. The Cougars however handled the pressure well, and maintained their composure to take the win by four to make their first win of the season a memorable one.
Leading the Cougars yet again was
Alex Nelson, bringing in an impressive 31 points. Nelson took advantage of the fouls she was dealt and had almost half of her points from the free throw line, going 13-14. The team overall had a great free throw percentage of 96.2%, going 25-26.
Tying for second place in points with ten was Sarah McGinley and
Haley Shaner who have been consistent forces for CCU. Leading in boards was
Jordan Baer with seven, and
Sarah Holt with six.
The team will head down to Colorado Springs for their last preseason game against Air Force, on Wednesday November 29th at 7pm.
