CCU Splits Day 1 of North Texas Softball Bash

Colorado Christian remained on the road Friday as they began play in the North Texas Softball Bash in Grand Prairie, TX. The Lady Cougars began the day facing off against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Cougs got the job done in game one as they defeated OPSU by a final score of 3-2. Then they took on Texas A&M Kingsville in game two, but lost by a final score of 2-0. After splitting the day, CCU now has a 5-4 record on the year.

Game 1:
The Cougs found themselves in an early hole in game one of the day as Oklahoma Panhandle State scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the 4th when Christian pushed across two runs to take the lead 2-1. The Cougs held onto slim lead until the 6th inning when OPSU scored the tying run. Neither team could score in the seventh, so the game headed into extra innings. Kenzie Mattey came in to relieve starter Kelsea Sweeney in the sixth inning, and was nearly perfect. Mattey finished the game tossing 3 2/3rd hitless, allowing one walk and striking out three. CCU pushed across the game winning run in the 9th inning, as they took advantage of an error by the Aggies.

Haley Anderson went 2-2 in the game and also drew two walks. Baylee Johnson went 2-4 with a triple. Kenzie Mattey earned her second win of the season.

Game 2:
The Lady Cougars ran into a buzz saw in their second game of the day in the form of Texas A&M- Kingsville pitcher Randa Hatter. Hatter tossed a gem and shut the Cougs offense down all seven innings. Despite the stellar performance on the mound, CCU remained within striking distance. Unfortunately, the Blue and Gold were unable to come away with a timely hit, and eventually fell by a final score of 2-0.

Hanna Farmer, Baylee Johnson, Amy Edison, and Shelbie Day each had one hit in the game.

Head coach Shanon Hays spoke after the game saying, "It was a long day today at the park. Our field had strong 15-25 MPH winds blowing in, which made offense hard to come by. Our pitching was solid today. We had a lot of runners on base today but just could never get that big hit to drive them in. We played good defense, we just couldn't get it done offensively."

CCU will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they continue play in the North Texas Softball Bash. The Cougs will take on Tarleton State University at 12PM MST, then will take on University of Texas- Permian Basin at 2PM MST.
