Offense Powers Cougs Past Greyhounds

CCU took the field on Saturday morning to play their final game of the North Texas Softball Bash against Eastern New Mexico University. Heading into the seventh, the score was tied, but the Cougs were able to score in the final inning and held on to win by a final score of 9-8. This marked the final game in Texas for the team, as they will return home and begin conference play next week.

As the game got underway, it looked like it was going to be a pitcher's duel. Kelsea Sweeney got the start for Colorado Christian, and Alyssa Lovato for the Greyhounds. Both pitchers were in control through four innings, as neither team was able to get any runs home. However, in the fifth the Cougars opened the offensive flood gate as they scored five runs in the inning. Letty Valenzuela broke the scoreless tie as she had an RBI single that scored Hanna Farmer. Stephanie Day followed up with an RBI double to score Valenzuela. Sarah Probasco knocked in two runs with a single, and Hayley Novacek capped off the inning with another RBI single.

The offense wasn't done, as CCU added three more runs in the sixth inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Cougs needed only three more outs to complete the shutout, but Eastern New Mexico had other ideas in mind. The Greyhounds mounted a tremendous comeback attempt and went on to score eight runs and tie up the game 8-8 heading into the last inning.

In the top of the seventh, CCU quickly loaded the bases thanks to three straight singles by Hanna Farmer, Shelbie Day, and Charlotte Romero. ENMU Tightened up defensively and was able to turn a double play. Luckily, the Cougs were able to push one run across thanks to heads up baserunning from Hanna Farmer. Farmer scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Cougs a 9-8 lead. Sarah Probasco came in and got the final three outs in the bottom of the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

Kelsea Sweeney got the win for Christian as she went six innings allowing six hits, four runs (three earned), walked two, and struck out three. Her record is now 3-0 on the year. Hanna Farmer went 3-3 in the game with three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Shelbie Day went 2-3 with one run scored and also drew a walk. Letty Valenzuela went 2-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Stephanie Day rounds out the offensive stars of the game as she went 2-3 with two RBI, and one run scored.

With the win, the Cougars record now sits at 7-5 on the year. They will be returning back home to begin conference play, starting with a doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo on Feb. 16th. That game will be in Pueblo, with first pitch scheduled for 4PM MST.
