Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

CCU Taken Down by Mountain Lions

Cougar fans came out in bunches on Saturday night, as they packed the CCU Event Center in support of Colorado Christian for Senior Night as the team took on UCCS. The Mountain Lions pulled away late in the game, as they were able to hold on and beat the Cougs by a final score of 79-68. Dimitri Saliba, Brett Brady, Andre Lane, Jacob Taylor, and Jake Vandenbrink all bid farewell to the home crowd, as the seniors played for the final time on their home floor.

It was a defensive battle to open the game, as neither side could get shots to fall. Five minutes into action, the game was tied 5-5. The defense continued to reign supreme in the half, as it remained a low scoring affair throughout the first 20 minutes of play.

With nearly 11 minutes left, CCU had a slim one point lead 11-10, but then they went on a 13-1 scoring run to give them a substantial 24-11 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. UCCS answered with a run of their own, rattling of 16 straight points to snatch the lead 27-24 with four minutes left. Both teams played the remainder of the first half close, but UCCS held a slim two point advantage heading into the half 35-33.

Brett Brady led the way at the half with 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor including 2-4 from long range. Dimitri Saliba and Andre Lane each had six points at the break.

After the break, both teams remained in a close battle. Ty McGee hit a three with 17:28 remaining, which trimmed the Mountain Lion lead down to one 41-40. However UCCS extended their lead again over the course of the next eight minutes as they slowly built their lead to 10 points as they led 60-50, and again at 65-55 with 6:28 to play in the game. CCU clawed their way back into it, and cut the Mountain Lion lead down to five with just over three minutes to go. The Cougs got it to within four at 72-68 with 2:#0 to go, but that was as close as it got. UCCS hit on their free throws late, which sealed the 79-68 victory over Colorado Christian.

Brett Brady finished as the leading scorer after dropping 29 points on the night. Brady was efficient going 11-17 from the floor and 5-8 from his attempts beyond the arc. Ty McGee finished with 15 points and was also the leading rebounder on the team with eight. Dimitri Saliba rounds out the Cougars who finished in double figures, as he had 13 in the game.

Head coach Kevin Lubbers spoke after the game saying, "Our seniors have all had great careers, and I wish we could have earned a win for them tonight. Rebounding and turnovers really hurt us all night. A new season starts next week with the playoffs, and we are certainly going to turn our focus on that right away. On to Pueblo Tuesday night."

Dimitri Saliba, Brett Brady, Andre Lane, Jacob Taylor, and Jake Vandenbrink have been outstanding representatives of CCU athletics both on and off of the floor. They will be missed by the program as they move on from the university.

The Cougars wrap up the regular season with a .500 record. Finishing 14-14 overall, and 11-11 in conference play. They will enter the RMAC tournament as the sixth seed, and will be traveling to Pueblo, CO on Tuesday night to take on the three seed CSU-Pueblo. Tip is set for 7:30PM MST.
