Colorado Christian opened up their home schedule on Friday afternoon with the first of a four game series against crosstown rival Regis University. The Cougs found themselves down early, and get not dig out of a large deficit as they ended up falling by a final score of 21-8.
Â
It was a beautiful day at All Star Park in Lakewood, CO, but Regis spoiled the Cougs home opener on the year. The Rangers scored early in often at the start of the game as they scored six runs in the first inning, five in the second inning, and four in the third, which buried the Cougars in a 15-0 hole.
Â
CCU attempted to have their offense get themselves back into the game, but unfortunately it was too much to overcome. The Cougs broke into the scoring column in the third inning as they put up two runs.
Â
Jerry Gallegos got the scoring started with an RBI double, followed by an RBI groundout from
Austin Maltby. Christian did not score again until the sixth inning when
Luke Bote drove home the Cougars third run with a sacrifice fly. Bote's ball appeared to be heading for the gap for at least a double, but the left fielder was able to cover a lot of ground and reached up to snag the hit away from the CCU utility infielder. The Cougs scored again in the seventh thanks to RBI groundouts from
Austin Maltby and
Alex Ginn. The Cougs final three runs came in the final inning, when
Luke Bote drove in two runs with a double to the wall in left, and then
Sam Gallegos doubled down the right field line to drive in Bote.
Â
All in all, it was a decent day at the plate for Colorado Christian as they finished the game with 11 runs on 15 hits.
Bryce Brenton finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored as he was the designated hitter in the game. It was a good game for the Gallegos brother's, as
Jerry Gallegos went 3-5 with a double and a triple, and
Sam Gallegos went 3-5 with a double.
Luke Bote finished 2-4 with three RBI, and
Alex Ginn went 2-5 with an RBI.
Â
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for doubleheader action in Lakewood. First pitch for game one is set for 2PM MST, and game two will immediately follow. Both games will take place in Lakewood at All Star Park.
