Cougars Take One From Roadrunners

CCU Softball split on day two vs the Metro State Roadrunners. The Cougs won game three 1-0, but dropped the fourth and final game 9-1.

The first game was a Cougar victory 1-0.  Simple hits and good defense by both teams caused for quick outs and a nearly scoreless game. Metro did have a big opportunity to score in the bottom of the fourth inning, but fell short with three straight outs and three on base. The Cougars scored in the top of the sixth inning. Romero singled to get on base, and then Valenzuela and Johnson were both walked. With only one out and three on base, CCU was in the prime position to score. Stephanie Day fouled out to right field, which allowed pinch runner Hailey Riesenmy to score. The final innings resulted in two more Metro hits, but no runs as CCU won 1-0. CCU's starting pitcher Kelsea Sweeney (10-2) took the win allowing six hits and no runs.

The Roadrunners and Cougars battled it out the first four innings in game two. Metro scored one in the first inning. CCU scored in the top of the third. Haley Novacek and Shelbie Day both had singles to get them on base, and then Hanna Farmer bunted to the pitcher. Novacek was able to score on an error by Metro's first baseman. The Roadrunners retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. CCU pitcher Sarah Probasco started the game, but came out after MSUD's third run was scored in the fourth. Sweeney relieved her, and gave up a hit in the fourth that was unearned from an error by the Cougs first baseman. Metro led 4-1.

Colo. Christian couldn't get anything going on offense. CCU hit into three double plays in the game. The Roadrunners lit it up at the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring five runs and ending the game in run rule 9-1. Sweeney was relieved by Tana Feiner in the 6th inning after two more runs were scored. Metro had two hits off Feiner scoring three runs.

Head Coach Shanon Hays commented on the weekend "I felt like we should have won ¾ games. We pitched good enough but made some poor defensive mistakes the last game. We stranded too many runner and couldn't get the big hit when needed. We should be getting some girls back healthy next week which will help."

The Cougs ended their series vs Metro State 1-3. CCU is now 18-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The Cougars will be at UCCS on March 25th and 26th.
