Strong Second Game Finish for CCU

Colorado Christian Softball traveled to Colorado Springs on Saturday morning to compete against UCCS. The Cougs were beat 12-3 in their first game of the day, but came out strong with a win 14-3 in the second.

The first game was rough for the Cougs. It ended in run rule in the 5th inning. UCCS' pitcher was solid on the mound and struck out five Cougars in five innings. The Mountain Lions scored runs in every inning except the second. CCU's starting pitcher Kelsea Sweeney ended the game with the loss (10-3). Sweeney allowed six hits, seven runs (four of which were earned), and one strikeout. UCCS got on a roll and could not be stopped.

CCU scored two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth. Their first run was from a Shelbie Day triple down the right field line, giving Hayley Novacek the run. Hanna Farmer then fouled out to left field, allowing Shelbie Day to score the second run for CCU. The third run was a single RBI homer from Baylee Johnson in the fourth. The two squads were tied after the top of the third 2-2, but Colo. Christian let the Mountain Lions gain too many in the bottom of the third as they scored five runs. The game ended 12-3.

The Cougars never stay down for too long. The second game was a different story as CCU pummeled UCCS with three doubles, one triple, and four home runs. The Lady Cougs came out ready and scored three runs in the first frame. Then two in the second, four in the third, and five more in the fifth to end the game in run rule 14-3.

The first three runs were off Sarah Probasco's homer to left field (3 RBI). Baylee Johnson and Charlotte Romero scored 3-0. Then Hanna Farmer homered to right center scoring Hayley Novacek 5-1 in the second inning. The third inning had Amy Edison with a run off of Haley Novacek's double, and then in the same inning Baylee Johnson hit a home run (3 RBI) running in Stephanie Day and Hanna Farmer. The fifth and final inning had St. Day and Farmer scoring two more runs off Charlotte Romero and Sarah Probasco singles. CCU first baseman Jennie Winston ended the game with another 3 RBI home run to left center. Probasco and Romero scored.

Center Fielder, Hanna Farmer went 3-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Stephanie Day hit 3-4 with two runs. Baylee Johnson and Jennie Winston had three RBIs each from their homers. Johnson hit 2-3 with two runs, and Winston went 3-4 with one run. Sarah Probasco had four RBIs and two runs. Every Cougar hit well and did a great job at getting in good scoring position.

CCU's ace, Kenzie Mattey was back on the mound in game two taking the win (6-4). Mattey threw all five innings, with four hits, and three runs. She struck out five Mountain Lions. UCCS threw three pitchers into the game trying to stop CCU's hitting streak, but nothing worked. The Cougs came out with the win 14-3.

CCU continues their series against UCCS tomorrow Sunday, March 26th at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
