Cougs Split Series with UCCS

Game 1

The Cougs scored first and last in game three of their series vs UCCS. Stephanie Day scored the first run off a Charlotte Romero double to right center, but then the Cougs were silent until the top of the seventh inning. In between, the Mountain Lions scored four in the third and one more in the fourth. Their third frame did the most damage to Christian and really sealed the deal for the win. But blue and gold came close to making an epic comeback that just fell short by two runs with three runners on base.

CCU was down 5-1 going into the top of the seventh. The Cougars were catching breaks left and right from a struggling UCCS pitcher. Jennie Winston led off and was walked. Pinch running for Winston was Hailey Riesenmy who advanced from a wild pitch. Then Amy Edison was walked. Riesenmy reached third and Edison was on first. Haley Anderson was at bat and doubled down the left field line. Riesenmy scored and Edison was on third. Hanna Farmer was then walked. Bases were loaded with only one out. The Cougs strongest hitter, Stephanie Day stepped up to the plate and smacked one to third base. Amy Edison scored, St. Day reached on a fielder's choice, and pinch runner Shelbie Day was out at third unassisted. The score was now 3-5 UCCS. Baylee Johnson stepped up and was walked. Bases loaded again with two outs. Christian came close but ended the game as Romero got out at first base unassisted. CCU fell short 5-3.

Starting pitcher Kelsea Sweeney pitched 3.1 innings and took the loss (10-4), but had four solid strikeouts. Tana Feiner came in for .2 innings and let one hit go. Sarah Probasco closed the game pitching two innings allowing no hits and one strikeout.

Game 2

Christian did a repeat of day one, as they lost the first game but won the second. CCU came out on top in the fourth and final game of the series 4-1. All of the Cougars runs were scored in the fourth inning and pitching for CCU was Kenzie Mattey. Mattey (7-4) ended the weekend with both the wins, pitching 12 innings total. In the fourth game Mattey threw seven innings, allowing seven hits, one run, one walk, and one strikeout. It was a solid performance from the Cougar's ace.

The first frame was quiet from both squads, but they both started to wake up in the second. CCU had two hits, but left two on base. UCCS had one hit and also left two on base. The third inning summed up the game as CCU scored four runs. It started with single hits that got the Cougs on base. Shelbie Day scored the first run off Stephanie Day's single to center field. Then Baylee Johnson and Charlotte Romero hit two doubles in a row allowing Stephanie Day, Hanna Farmer, and Romero to score runs. Christian led 4-0. UCCS made the appropriate change at the mound and the inning ended with a foul out, putout at third, and strikeout.

The Mountain Lions scored their single run in the bottom of the third from a double to left center field. They never came close to scoring after that.

Highlights
  • Game 1 Bottom 2-CCU catcher, Amy Edison threw runner out at second, caught stealing
  • Game 2 Bottom 2- CCU catcher, Amy Edison threw runner out at first base from a bunt.
  • Both games- Charlotte Romero went 3-8, with one run, and three RBI's

Head Coach Shanon Hays summed up the series saying:

"It was a disappointing weekend for us. We played two really good defensive games and two really bad ones. With Letty gone we shifted around our defense some and it didn't go very well. The wind really blew in hard on Sunday and that shut down our offense a bit. Kenzie Mattey came back from being out with mono for three weeks and threw really well. Hayley Novacek had a good series in both offense and defense. Hopefully we can come off spring break and get back on track next week."

CCU Softball is 20-12 overall and 10-6 in conference. They play at Lakewood Park April 1st & 2nd vs Chadron State College.
