CCU Softball started their Chadron series off with a win 3-1, but then fell short in their afternoon game 7-3.
In the first game, Colo. Christian scored a run in the first inning.
Charlotte Romero had the run off a
Letty Valenzuela single to right field. Chadron State scored their solo run in the third inning, and then CCU rebutted with one in the third from
Hanna Farmer off a
Baylee Johnson single to center field.
Letty Valenzuela hit a home run in the sixth to end the scoring for both squads. This was the only homer hit all day. Valenzuela finished game 1 going 2-3 with one run and two RBIs.
CCU's starting pitcher
Kelsea Sweeney took the win at 11-4 throwing 5.2 innings. Sweeney allowed five hits, one unearned run, and struck out four.
In the Cougars loss to Chadron State, defense struggled, and CCU's bullpen was utilized to the max.
Kenzie Mattey started on the mound for Christian, but after Chadron scored three runs in the top of the fourth, Mattey was replaced by
Sarah Probasco. CCU had a couple of critical throwing errors in this inning that cost them the lead. The score was 3-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.
CCU's first two runs were scored in the first inning off a double from
Baylee Johnson and then another from
Stephanie Day.
Hanna Farmer and Johnson scored. Back to the fourth inning, CCU was down 3-2, but tied it up at threes from a sac fly from
Jennie Winston allowing
Stephanie Day to score. At this point
Sarah Probasco was still throwing for the Cougs. Chadron got one more run in the top of the sixth to give them the lead and Probasco the loss (3-5). After that Probasco was replaced by Sweeney. Sweeney struggled to place the ball, and walked two Eagles allowing three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Tana Feiner came in for Sweeney and got the last out.
The Cougars weren't able to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Chadron State won the game 7-3. Christian will be back on their home field on
Monday, April 3
rd vs the Chadron State Eagles. Games start at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.
