Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits the Day, and Series with UCCS

Colorado Christian split with UCCS during the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, which also split the series. CCU lost game one by a final score of 9-4, but bounced back to win the second game 11-6. Each team won two games in the four game series over the weekend.

Game 1:
It appeared to be a pitcher's duel early on in the first game of the day, as each starting pitcher did what they could to keep the opposing offense in check. UCCS got on the board first as they tallied a single run in the second inning to take the early lead. The Cougars answered back and tied things up in the fourth thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Luke Bote which scored Scotty Wright.

From that point, UCCS went on an offensive rampage, scoring eight unanswered runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead after seven innings of play. Christian scored three more runs late in the game, but it was not enough to come back as they fell by a final score of 9-4.

The Cougs had a good game from the middle of their lineup. Scotty Wright finished 2-4 with a run scored, and Alex Ginn went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Joey Loranger took the loss in the game pitching six innings and allowing eight hits, six runs (four earned), and struck out three. Tyler Henning had a good outing in relief pitching two scoreless innings while allowing only one hit.

Game 2:
It was a shootout early on, and Jerry Gallegos got the game going with a bang as he belted a two run homerun to right field to put the Cougs up 2-0. UCCS answered loudly with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first, then two more in the bottom of the second to regain the lead 5-2. Scotty Wright singled in Copper Gray in the third inning, then Quinn Hunter scored Jerry Gallegos and Scotty Wright with a double to tie things up 5-5.

The Mountain Lions scored one in the third inning which gave them the 6-5, but that would be the last run they would score in the game as the CCU pitching staff shut them down in the final four innings of the game.

In the fourth inning, Christian was able to push across two runs which put them in front for good. Scotty Wright provided the insurance coverage as he blasted his first homerun of the season in the sixth inning which gave CCU the 9-6 lead. The Cougars added two more in the seventh to finish of UCCS as they won by a final score of 11-6.

Offensively, the team combined for 11 runs on 14 hits. Cooper Gray went 2-3 with two runs scored. Jerry Gallegos finished 2-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. Scotty Wright went 3-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Quinn Hunter also finished with two hits in four at bats while driving in two runs.

Colorado Christian ends the successful weekend with their first two conference victories of the season. They will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Alamosa to face off against Adams State. That series will begin on Friday March 31 at 3PM MST.
