Colorado Christian played a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Colorado Mesa, but were unable to come away with a victory as they lost game one 14-1, then lost the second game 16-2. Mesa continued their offensive hot streak, as they tallied 30 runs on the day, and have 43 total over the first three games of the series.
Â
Game 1:
The Cougs found themselves in an early hole in the first game of the day, as Mesa jumped out to a 6-0 lead after just two innings of play. CCU attempted to get back into the game in the third inning when
Austin Maltby got the Cougars on the board with an RBI single which drove in
Kaleb Johnson to score their first run of the game.
Â
Unfortunately, that was the only run the Mavericks would allow, as they added onto their lead in the third and fourth innings, then scored the final two runs in the sixth which gave them the 14-1 victory over the blue and gold.
Â
The Cougars had nine hits in the game, led by
Austin Maltby and
Sam Gallegos who both finished the game 2-3.
Brandon Hesselberg also had two hits in the game, going 2-4.
Jerry Gallegos had the only extra base hit for CCU, as he had his team leading eighth double of the season in the third inning.
Â
Game 2:
The second game began much like the first, as the 24
th ranked Mavericks scored six runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. After scoring twice more, the Cougs found themselves with an eight run deficit heading into the fifth inning.
Â
CCU mounted a rally in the fifth, as they were able to string some hits together, and score a couple of runs.
Austin Atkerson drove in
Austin Maltby for the Cougs first run with a double to left centerfield. After a
Sam Gallegos single,
Luke Bote drove in the second run with an RBI single through the left side. After the fifth, the Cougs were unable to score again as CMU went on to win by a 16-2 final score.
Â
With the loss, the Cougars record now sits at 6-11 overall, and 0-3 in conference play. They will be back in action Sunday as they play the series finale with Colorado Mesa. First pitch is scheduled for 12PM MST. Â
