The Cougars were able to take a game away from Colorado Mesa on day two of their series. CCU split with the Mavericks dropping game three 12-0, but then winning the finale 6-3. This was Mesa's sixth loss overall, fourth in conference. Christian finished strong in a tough weekend of play.
Â
Sweeney (14-7) led the Cougs to the single victory in an outstanding performance on the mound. Sweeney threw seven innings and 100 pitches, allowing eight hits, three runs-two earned, and three strikeouts.
Â
The Cougs faced CMU's #2 pitcher, Kimbri Herring who took her first loss of the season at 12-1. Christian knocked seven hits and five runs off Herring, and then another three hits and one run off McKenzie Surface who threw the final two innings.
Â
CCU's center fielder,
Hanna Farmer had one of her best hitting games all season going 4-4, with four runs and a stolen base. Christian's first run was in the first frame.
Letty Valenzuela doubled to left field allowing Farmer to score. Mesa knocked a run in each of the first three innings staying up on the Cougs 3-1 in the third.
Jennie Winston would hit a sac fly in the bottom of the third running across Farmer again.
Â
It was all CCU offense after the third inning. Sweeney shut down the Mavericks at the plate as blue and gold scored four more runs in the game winning 6-3. In the fifth,
Charlotte Romero hit a single that barely scored
Shelbie Day as she slid into home plate, successfully beating the throw.
Baylee Johnson then singled to right field, scoring Farmer. The final run in the fifth was off a
Letty Valenzuela single to CMU's shortstop who tried to throw CCU pinch runner,
Hailey Riesenmy out at home. Once again, the Mavericks failed to get the out, as Riesenmy's quick feet crossed by a mile. In the sixth inning, Romero hit a single to third base, but reached on a catching error by CMU's first baseman.
Hanna Farmer scored off the error.
Â
Colo. Christian Softball will be back at Lakewood Park 4/29 and 4/30 for their final conference games of the season. The Cougs play neighboring Colorado School of Mines.
