Cougs Maul Grizzlies, Win Series

Colorado Christian took on Adams State for a conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Alamosa. The Cougs used an offensive explosion to win both games on the day, taking game one by a 19-16 final score, and the second game 16-6. CCU won the series by taking three of the four games, and scored an impressive 58 runs during the four game series. By winning the series, it marks the first time since 2010 that the Cougars have secured a series win against a conference opponent.

Game One:
Offense was the theme in the first game of the day, and Christian started things off by scoring three runs in the top of the first to take the early 3-0 lead. However Adams answered with a single run in the first, two in the second, and one more in the third inning which allowed them to take a 4-3 lead after three innings of play.

The score remained in favor of the Grizzlies until the top of the fifth inning when the power surge began for CCU. Luke Bote collected an RBI on a single in the fifth which scored Scotty Wright and tied the game up 4-4. After Austin Maltby drew a walk, Sam Gallegos gave CCU the lead again with an RBI single scoring Alex Ginn. Kaleb Johnson followed Gallegos with a double that scored Maltby and Bote. Cooper Gray got in on the hit parade in the fifth as well, as his single drove in Sam Gallegos and Kaleb Johnson. When all was said and done, the Cougs had scored seven runs on five hits in the fifth inning, and had taken a commanding 10-4 lead in the game.

After Adams State scored once in their half of the fifth, the Cougars picked up right where they left off scoring three more runs in the sixth inning. Austin Maltby provided the offense in the sixth, as he hammered a three run homerun deep over the centerfield wall. It was the second homerun for Maltby on the year. After six innings of play, the Cougars held a 13-5 advantage.

Give Adams State credit, they refused to give up, as they mounted a rally in the seventh inning by scoring seven runs to bring them within one at 13-12. CCU answered back in the eighth inning as they scored five more runs to give them a six run lead. Adams once again mounted another rally in their half of the eighth inning, scoring another three runs to tighten things up again as the Cougar lead was trimmed down to three as the score was 18-15.

Colorado Christian scored once more in the ninth thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cooper Gray. Freshman Jarrod Rivera came in and slammed the door shut in the ninth, and preserved the Cougar victory by a final score of 19-16.

Offensively, the Cougars scored 19 runs on 21 hits. Both were season highs for the squad. Luke Bote was the offensive star in the game going 5-6 with a double, three runs scored, and collected four RBI in the game. Austin Maltby also had a great game as he was just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Maltby finished the game 3-4 with two runs scored, and five RBI, while also drawing two walks. Alex Ginn had another great game at the plate going 3-4 with three runs scored. Cooper Gray, Kaleb Johnson, and Mikale Doherty each finished the game with two hits as well.

Joey Loranger picked up his second win of the season after throwing six innings allowing eight hits, five runs (two earned), walked two, and struck out a season high 10 batters.

Game Two:
Both team's offenses remained hot heading into the start of the second game. Once again CCU was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Adams State answered back as they were able to score two in the bottom of the first to tie the game heading into the second inning.

CCU regained the lead in the second inning by scoring six runs highlighted by RBI doubles from Dillon Mctague, Kaleb Johnson, and Jerry Gallegos. Adams once again scored two runs in their half of the second, but CCU still held the lead 8-4 after two innings of play.

Jerry Gallegos had a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give the Cougs a 9-4 lead. The Grizzlies scored two in their half of the third inning which trimmed the lead down to three. That was all the Christian pitching staff would allow, as they were able to hold Adams State Scoreless for the remaining four innings of the game.

Colorado Christian kept in rhythm on offense as they score seven unanswered runs to finish out the game and secure the 16-6 victory. The Cougs scored in every inning except the fourth.

Jerry Gallegos was perfect in the game going 4-4 with a double, three runs scored, two RBI, and also collected a stolen base in the game. Dillon Mctague had a tremendous game at the plate going 3-5 with two doubles, a homerun, three runs scored, and four RBI. The homerun marked the second of the season for Mctague. Austin Maltby also finished the game with three hits going 3-4 with a double, two runs, and one RBI. Cooper Gray went 2-3 in the game with two runs scored. Gray also drew two walks and stole two bases to add to his conference lead in both categories.

Michael Cantrell picked up his first victory of the season despite a rougher outing. Cantrell went 2 2/3rd innings giving up six hits, six runs (four earned), while walking three and striking out one. Freshman Quinn Hunter was phenomenal in relief as he finished the game throwing 4 1/3rd innings allowing just one hit and no runs, walked two and struck out one.

With the sweep on the day, the Cougars record now sits at 11-19 overall, and 5-11 in conference play. They will be back in action on Friday as they will travel down to Grand Junction for four games. They will be taking on Colorado School of Mines for two games, and also Colorado Mesa for two games. They begin against Mines on Friday April 7th as first pitch is scheduled for 3:30PM MST.
