CCU Softball took two clutch wins on Saturday afternoon vs Regis University. Game one flew into extra innings as Christian won in the bottom of the eighth 1-0, and game two was a solid performance by CCU hitters to win 5-1.
Â
Game 1
Â
CCU's series starter with the Regis Rangers ended in an extra inning victory 1-0 for the Cougs. It was an all-out defensive battle between the two squads as both teams could not find a way to score. The Cougs ended the game with eight hits and the Rangers had six. CCU's starting pitcher
Kelsea Sweeney pitched a shut-out game, throwing eight innings with five strikeouts.
Â
Sweeney (12-6) proved herself on the mound in the top of the fifth inning. The Rangers went on a bunting frenzy and reach first, second, and third all with their skilled short-game. Christian reached each ball, but could not make the outs. With bases loaded, and only one out it didn't look good for the Cougs, but Sweeney struck out the next Regis hitter swinging. Cougar fans roared, but there was still one more out to be made. The inning ended in an easy fly out to right field, and everyone could breathe again.
Â
Regis' starting pitcher Logan Losh (17-7) threw a good game as well with two strikeouts, but after throwing 116 pitches, the Ranger let up towards the end and walked
Baylee Johnson in the eighth. It was a good spot in the Cougar lineup with
Letty Valenzuela up to the plate and
Stephanie Day on deck. Valenzuela singled up the middle and Johnson went to third. Valenzuela then stole second in between pitches.
Stephanie Day who leads the cougars in RBI and home runs, and second in batting average won the game on a walk-off single up the middle, allowing Johnso to score the winning run 1-0.
Â
Game 2
Â
Game two started off with a lot more action, and the Cougars scoring first. Everything went CCU's way in the bottom of the second frame.
Amy Edison was up first and walked.
Hayley Novacek reached first on a throwing error that went over the first baseman's head. Novacek advanced to second and Edison to third. Regis made two outs, and both CCU runners stayed on base.
Hanna Farmer was walked. The bases were loaded and
Charlotte Romero smacked a double to right field scoring all three runners. The Cougs led 3-0.
Â
Regis walked in a run in the bottom of the third,
Hailey Riesenmy scored 4-0 CCU. The Rangers scored one run in the top of the fifth, but CCU retaliated with a single run in the bottom. Edison advanced to third off Novocaek's sac bunt, and then was bunted in by
Jennie Winston. CCU led 5-1.
