Colorado Christian split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against New Mexico Highlands University. The Cougs opened the day with a walk-off 3-2 victory in game one, but lost the second game 21-5.
Â
Game 1:
The Cougars got off to a good start in the first game of the day, as they were able to score one in the first inning thanks to
Austin Maltby. Maltby narrowly missed hitting a homerun for the second consecutive day as he doubled off the wall in left centerfield which drove in
Jerry Gallegos.
Â
With a 1-0 lead, CCU starter
Evan Fink cruised through the first five innings of the game allowing just three hits and no runs. CCU added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as the Cougs took advantage of an error by the Cowboys to take a 2-0 lead.
Â
New Mexico Highlands came back in the sixth inning scoring two runs to tie the game. Fink remained in the game, and came back to fire another scoreless inning in the seventh, which gave CCU an opportunity for a walk-off victory.
Â
Cooper Gray opened the seventh inning with a double down the left field line.
Jerry Gallegos followed that with a perfectly placed bunt single which put runners at first and third with nobody out.
Scotty Wright drew a walk to load the bases, which brought up
Austin Maltby. Maltby delivered, as he sent a line drive into right centerfield to give the Cougars the victory.
Â
Austin Maltby finished the game 2-3 with two RBI and also drew a walk in the game.
Jerry Gallegos also collected two hits in the game, finishing 2-4 with a run scored.
Â
Evan Fink picked up his team leading sixth victory on the season as he pitched a complete game allowing four hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out four.
Â
Game 2:
In a sign of respect, head coach
Gregg Mucerino handed the ball off to
Matt Fontneau to start the second game of the day. Fontneau is one of seven seniors for CCU that is playing in their final home series of their careers. Fontneau was up for the challenge in the first inning, as he worked a perfect inning retiring the side in order.
Â
The Cougar offense once again jumped out to an early lead for the third straight game. They provided three runs in the inning thanks to an RBI groundout from
Austin Maltby, and a double off the bat of
Dillon Mctague to drive in two. Highlands answered back in the top of the second inning as they erased the Cougar lead by scoring three runs of their own to tie the game up at 3-3.
Â
Colorado Christian's offense remained hot in the second inning, scoring two more runs to regain the lead 5-3. From that point on the game belonged to the Cowboys. They rattled off 18 unanswered runs in the game, as they scored in every inning except the first.
Â
Scotty Wright,
Austin Maltby,
Kaleb Johnson and
Bryce Brenton all finished the game 2-3.
Â
The Cougars will be back in action on Sunday afternoon beginning at 12PM MST, as they are looking to pick up the victory and split the series with New Mexico Highlands. Come out to All Star Park in Lakewood and cheer on the Cougars for Senior Day. CCU will be honoring seven seniors who will be taking the field for the last time at home.
