Baseball Falls in Finale

Colorado Christian wrapped up regular season play on Sunday afternoon, as they took on New Mexico Highlands University for the final game of the four game series. The Cowboys got the better of the Cougars on the day, winning the game by a final score of 11-4. It was Senior Day at the ballpark, as CCU honored seven seniors who took their home field for the last time.

Senior Tom Sigrist got the start for the Cougs on the day, and was lights out early on. Sigrist retired the side in order in the first inning striking out two. For the fourth game in a row, CCU jumped out to an early lead by scoring in the first inning. Scotty Wright and Luke Bote both collected RBI's in the first, to give the Cougs an early 2-0 lead.

Highlands answered back in the second inning by scoring three runs to snatch the lead away. In the bottom half of the second, Scotty Wright evened the score, as his sac fly scored Bryce Brenton to tie things up 3-3.

The Cowboys regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring five runs to give them the lead 8-3. The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the fourth, but unfortunately that was all the offense CCU had in the game, as NMHU added three more runs in the fifth and picked up the victory 11-4.

The Cougar offense had 14 hits in the game, with five players collecting multiple hits on the day. Every starter collected at least one hit in the game. Cooper Gray went 2-5 in the game, and also collected two stolen bases. Gray is the new Cougar record holder for both stolen bases in a single season, as well as a career with 27. Jerry Gallegos also went 2-5 in the game, which pushed his average on the season right at .400. Scotty Wright, Luke Bote and Bryce Brenton each finished the game 2-4.

In a touching ceremony, CCU honored the seven seniors on the team prior to the start of the final home game in their careers. Austin Atkerson, Matt Fontneau, Jerry Gallegos, Sam Hardy, Owen Harris, Brandon Hesselberg, and Tom Sigrist were all joined by their parents on the field as the home crowd gave them well deserved recognition for all of their contributions to the Cougar baseball program during their time at CCU. This was followed by the honorary first pitch, which was thrown out by all seven fathers to their sons.

With the regular season now over, the Cougs now set their sights on the NCCAA tournament which will be hosted in Kansas next weekend. Game times and opponents are to be determined, but check back here for the most up to date information.
