CCU took on the Orediggers from Colorado School of Mines on a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon on September 24. The Cougars came into the match with a record of 3-4, and 0-2 in RMAC play. The Orediggers came in sporting a record of 4-1-1 and 1-0-1 in conference play.
The first half began in a flash, when the Orediggers scored in the second minute when they volleyed in a corner kick and one-touched it into the back of the net. The Cougars did not get down on themselves though and fought hard to get that goal back.
CCU kept the intensity up continued to press the action when in the 20
th minute a corner kick came in from senior
Alyssa Regalado and junior midfield
Renee De La Torre volleyed it over to senior midfielder
Sheridan Spelman who was primed for the pass and netted the equalizer. The goal was Spelman's first of the year, and second of her CCU career. Spelman has had a very involved four-year career, appearing in 64 games and counting since her freshman year in 2014.
As the first half came to a close it looked as though the teams would head into the lock rooms in an even 1-1 tie. However, with just 20 seconds left on the clock, Mines booted another corner kick and found the head of a teammate in the box and put it in the goal to go up 2-1.
The second half saw freshman goalkeeper
Ireland VanDyke keep a clean sheet and save three shots in 45 minutes of work. The Cougars would only manage two shots in the second half as the rain continued to fall, but were unable to even the score.
The loss drops the Cougars to 3-5 overall on the season, and 0-3 in conference play. CCU will travel to Pueblo, CO, on Friday the 29
th to take on the Thunderwolves who are currently undefeated in three RMAC contests.
