Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Takes Tie

Colorado Christian University Men's Soccer began their third game of preseason on Thursday, September 7th against the Western Washington University Vikings. After a tough loss a few days prior, the Cougars started out strong and maintained good control, resulting with a score of 2-2.

With an exciting start, the first goal was scored in the fifth minute. It started with a corner taken by CCU's Jack McCunn that dropped the ball right in front of the goal. In the middle of the chaos between the teams, the Vikings knocked the ball into their own net to score the Cougars first goal of the season.

The Cougars were quick to score another in the 13th minute on a goal of their own. Blake Goodale, who lead the team in goals last season, scored a penalty kick after the Vikings had a handball in their own box.

The Vikings responded with a goal of their own in the 22nd minute, after a corner was headed in by Colton Ronk to make the score 2-1.

Going into the second half, the Vikings equalized the score in the 66th minute. The goal was made off a foul kick from the left side 25 yard line, right into the middle of the net. Both teams were unable to get the ball in the net for the rest of regulation play, resulting in double overtime.

Going into overtime, the score and the shots were both tied at two goals and fourteen shots. The renewed sense of urgency created a lot of action on the field, and the Vikings got off six shots, while the Cougars had none.

Freshman CCU goalie Taylor Budzinski had six saves, and senior Tyler Visten of WWU had four.

The Cougar defense remained strong throughout the game, which is what ultimately sustained the team to take the tie. Six yellow cards were dished out throughout the game, WWU taking two and CCU doubling the amount and taking four.

Before heading into conference play, the Cougars will finish up their last game of preseason this Saturday, 3PM at Trailblazer Stadium.
