The Cougars traveled to Grand Junction on Saturday, Jan. 13, to take on the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University. CCU came into the game with a record of 5-9 (3-6 RMAC) after squeaking out a one point win against Western State University the night before in Gunnison. The Mavericks started the evening sporting a record of 12-4 overall (6-4 RMAC).
Â
The first half saw the Mavericks be stifled by the Cougar defense, forcing CMU into shooting just 25.8% from the field, and 23.1% from 3-point territory, well below their season average which ranks in the top four in the RMAC. The Cougars took advantage of this opportunity and took a 25-20 lead into halftime.
Â
The second half saw a revitalized Mavericks crew as they opened with a 12-0 run in the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Cougars would fight back but would ultimately be outscored in the third quarter 20-8 to trail by a score of 33-40 going into the final quarter of play.
Â
The Cougars would not go quietly and would mount quite a comeback in the 4
th. CCU would open on a 7-0 run, all scored by freshman Sarah McGinley to get back within two points of the lead. The score would stay tight until the very end, but with just over three minutes left in the game both teams shooting would go ice cold. The Cougars would shoot 1-8 in the final three and a half minutes, with their only make coming at the buzzer to bring the final score to 46-48.
Â
McGinley would lead all scorers for the game with 19.
Haley Shaner had herself a big night as well, tallying the only double-double of the game with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Jordan Baer, who notched a strong double-double the previous night, fell just short of duplicating that effort notching nine points and nine rebounds against the Mavericks.
Â
The Cougars fall to 5-10 on the season (3-7 RMAC) after the loss and will next travel to Pueblo, CO, on Jan. 16
th to take on the Timberwolves of CSU – Pueblo at 5:30 p.m.
