Hosting their home opener against the Warriors of Winona State, the Cougars fought hard but fell in the fourth quarter with a final score of 58-66.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Although it took the Cougars a few minutes to land a bucket, they finished the first quarter with the lead, 10-9. Getting into their rhythm, Colorado Christian was into their rhythm for the second quarter. With back to back threes from
Jordan Baer and
Marie Tsoungui the team jumped to a 7 point lead. This lead continued to grow until it reached as much as 11. The Warriors however took advantage of a couple turnovers and went on a 9-0 run to shorten the difference to just 2. Going into the locker rooms at the half, Colorado Christian had the advantage with a 3 point lead over Winona State, 26-23. Leading scorers at the half were
Jordan Baer with 9 and
Marie Tsoungui with 8.Â
Coming into the second half, the Cougars were the first ones on the board. The third quarter was close to being evenly matched, after Colorado Christian scored 20 and Winona State scored 19. Yet again the Cougars were able to jump to a lead of 11 points, but the Warriors fought their way back to make it a 2 point ball game going into the 4th.Â
Maintaining their lead for the first five minutes, the Cougars put the pressure on Winona State. The Warriors prevailed to tie up the game at 54, only to take the lead 56-54. With 3 minutes left in the game the teams were tied up at 56. From there the Warriors snuck away with the lead and never gave it back. Despite their efforts, Colorado Christian was unable to stop the Warrior offense as they outscored the Cougars by 10 in the 4th quarter, winning with a final score of 66-58.Â
GAME LEADERS: Leading the Cougars in points and rebounds was
Jordan Baer with 17 and 9 respectively. Two others were in the double digit point range, including
Marie Tsoungui and
Sarah McGinley. Tsoungui had 14, followed by McGinley with 13.Â
UP NEXT: The loss gives the team an overall record of 2-3. Colorado Christian will host their last non conference game of the year on Saturday, November 24th against the Dragons of Minnesota State University Moorhead. Tip-off is set for 2pm.Â
