Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CCU Honors Seniors at Last Home Game

The Cougars played the #1 RMAC team CSUP on Saturday night which was also CCU's senior night and their last home game of the season.  Despite losing 65-51, it was one of CCU's strongest first half's this season.

The young Cougar squad played up to their opponent's level in the first two quarters, but with a bench full of injuries, the Cougs struggled to finish strong in the second.

In the first quarter CCU only trailed behind Pueblo 23-15 shooting 43% from the field.  What hurt them here was 0-4 from three, but what helped them in the second quarter was went Pueblo went 0% from three.  CCU scored nine points and Pueblo ten in the second quarter.  Christian was able to close the gap a little as they went into the locker room down 33-24.

The third quarter dwindled down to CCU scoring only seven points while CSUP scored 17.  This had Pueblo up 50-31.  Christian struggled with turnovers and shooting, but the highlight of the night was when CCU senior #22 Katie Vieweg made two three pointers in a row in the final seconds.

Scoring high for CCU was junior #12 Jordan Baer who had 16 points and eight rebounds plus two blocks and two steal.  Freshman #23 Sarah McGinley totaled 12 points and Madison Price had 11.  Senior #32 Haley Shaner had eight rebounds.

At the end of the game, three seniors were honored.  Alex Nelson, Katie Vieweg, and Haley Shaner

Alex Nelson:

Since her sophomore year to now, Alex Nelson has been an incredible leader on the court for the Cougs.  Alex is arguably one of the most dynamic players in the RMAC as she has a combination of speed, skills, and smarts.  After a standout performance last season, Nelson was named Second Team All-RMAC and then to the 2017-2018 Preseason All-RMAC Team.  Nelson was also named the RMAC Player of the Week after a 31 point barrage vs Bemidji State in preseason.  Nelson totals
769 points, 50 steals, and 327 rebounds in her Cougar career.

Head Coach Corey Laster remarked "It has been a pleasure coaching Alex the last two years. My main regret is that her senior season ended too soon. Alex commitment to the game work ethic is evident in how she practices and plays the game. Alex has been a healthy example to her teammates. Romans 12:2 says,  Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. There is no question that Alex will impact the lives of other as she continues to seek God's will for her life.

Katie Vieweg:

Katie Vieweg is one of the most motivated and compassionate student-athletes CCU has seen.  She is a junior athletically, but is graduating a year early to pursue PA school and start her career in the medical field.  Katie has been a top player academically for the last three years boasting a 3.85 GPA in Psychology.

Head Coach Corey Laster remarked "Katie has served as team chaplain this season, and maintained a positive attitude despite sitting out this season due to injury. Katie is someone with a high degree of faith and values. This which has been a great example to others. She is one of the first people to say yes when you need help. In Ephesians 5:8 it is written, For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the LORD. Live as children of light. Katie is consistently strivings to live her life in this manner and our team has been blessed for it. She will be missed.

Haley Shaner:

Haley Shaner has been a key player for the Cougars in the last two seasons.  Haley is an incredible athlete that has height, length, and a great shot from the outside.  Haley shot 45% from three her junior year and totals 392 points in her Cougar career.

Head Coach Corey Laster remarked "Haley has developed on and off the court since arriving at CCU. Haley has a goal to coach basketball which is one of just many other things I'm sure she will accomplish. She has a high basketball IQ and passion for the sport. Over her time at CCU she as participated in food distribution, rescue mission and many other service projects. The book of Mark says ,"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Haley has a good heart for serving others. She is a very talented player who has a willingness to play any role to help her team. Haley has a bright future, and I can't wait to see what she does next".
