Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougs Battle at Home, but Fall Short to Rangers

Colorado Christian Men's Basketball lost to Regis University Saturday night 87-79.

CCU outshot the Rangers from three in the first half 30% to 18%.  Other than that the Rangers controlled the game.  Their bench scored 32 points in the first half and they went 11-11 from the line and 50% from the field. CCU's #13 Jeremiah Hanson had 12 points.  The Cougs went into the locker room down 49-34.

It wasn't until there was 15 minutes left in the game that the Cougs caught a spark driven by freshman point guard #11 Tyler Murrell.  Murrell's hard work on the court was visible and he wasn't going to let go.  Even though the freshman's momentum was slow-going, the Cougs crept closer and closer in points to the Rangers.  With 12 minutes left CCU was 11 points behind at 64-53-stagnant.

But then three major game changers happened 1.  Regis started fouling uncontrollably 2.  Regis stopped making their shots and 3.  CCU senior #24 Isaiah Hanson blew up.

With eight minutes left in the game the Cougs had closed the gap by ten points at 69-59 and then 71-61.  Isaiah Hanson was fouled.  Now the game is 71-64.  Not only was Regis struggling on defense, but they also let the ball go.  Regis turned over and Isaiah Hanson banked a three to have the Cougs only down by six points 73-67.  Regis was coming undone.  Another foul on Isaiah Hanson had the Cougs five points away from the Rangers 77-72.  Turnover Regis and foul on Isaiah Hanson again!  CCU down only four points 78-74 with only a couple minutes left in the game.

In the meantime Regis' free throws aren't falling.  They went 53% in the second half at 9-17 from the line.  But they still had the upper hand and gained a comfortable lead with thirty seconds left.

The score was 84-79, but with seconds left turnovers killed the Cougs.  Despite the CCU Senior's effort, the Cougs lost 87-79.

Isaiah Hanson came out with 28 points shooting 8-14 FG, 4-6 3FG and 8-10 FT.  I. Hanson also led the team in rebounds with seven.  Younger brother Jeremiah Hanson totaled 18 points.  Freshman point guard Tyler Murrell had eight points, six rebounds, and four assists with three steals. Cougar post Marcus Fager had eight points on the night, one block and one steal.  CCU finished strong shooting 45% from the field and three point line, and then 77% from the line.
