The Cougar Softball team went 1-1 on their second day of season, giving them an overall record of 3-1 to start off strong.
Game One – Montana State University Billings
CCU Softball took their first loss of the season on day two of the Desert Stinger Tournament, coming off of two back to back wins the day before. The Cougars played Montana State University Billings at 3pm on February 3
rd, and lost by three runs, 8-5.
The game saw the Cougars changing up their lineup from the day before. The first inning the Cougars were shut down early, only having three girls at bat. Billings had eight at bats, and got in two runs.
In the second inning,
Stephanie Day had a hit, then
Alyssa Hanks and
Amy Edison were both hit by a hitch allowing three Cougars on base.
Jennie Winston was at bat and was walked.
Stephanie Day scored the Cougars first run of the game.
Both teams brought in a single run in the third, after
Kendall Yasui hit a single and stole two bases to be brought in from a single by
Alyssa Hanks. Both teams matched runs again in the fourth inning, scoring 2 a piece to make the score 7-4 in the eagles favor going into the fifth.
The Cougars scored their last run of the game in the fifth inning after
Carly Perry scored off of an error from the Yellowjackets. The third homerun from the same Billings player in the bottom of the 6
th inning scored the final run of the game, to finalize the score of 8-5. CCU Freshman
Jennifer Romero pitched the first two innings of the game taking the loss (0-1). CCU Sophomore
Sarah Probasco threw the last four innings and had three strikeouts, allowing six hits and four runs.
Game Two – Concordia University (Calif.)
The Cougars took the field for a second time at 8:00pm against the Eagles of Concordia University. The Cougars had more time to rest between games compared to yesterday, which ended up paying off in their win against Concordia University (Calif.), 6-4.
The first two innings were scoreless for both teams, but the Cougars brought in three runs back to back in the 3
rd and 4
th innings each to win the game.
Shelby Fusich hit a homerun in the third giving her three RBI.
Alyssa Hanks also had a single-run homer at the beginning of the fourth that was followed by a
Stephanie Day double scoring in Shelbie Day. At this point
Stephanie Day was on third,
Kacie Burger second and
Hanna Farmer on first. Concordia's pitcher struggled to find the plate and walked Baylee Johnson giving the Cougs their final run scored by
Stephanie Day.
Both teams had two home runs, but the Cougars made it count. The Eagles tried to work their way back in, getting single runs in the 3
rd and 5
th and 2 in the 7
th but it was not enough.
CCU's ace
Kenzie Mattey started out the game throwing 4.1 innings allowing only five hits, and two runs. Mattey had four strikeouts on the mound.
Sarah Probasco closed the game also tallying four strikeouts and allowing only two hits and two runs.
CCU will play one more game to close out their opening weekend on Sunday, February 4
th at 3pm against Texas Woman's University.
