Day One Sweep for Lady Cougs

Game 1

CCU Softball took to the field on a windy day in Lakewood, CO at 12:00pm against the Roadrunners of Metropolitan State University. After six innings, the Cougars came out with the win with a score of 12-4.

Metro took a quick lead in the first inning scoring two runs and then another one in the third. They held the Cougars to zero runs until the bottom of the third, when CCU brought in two of their own.  LF Kendall Yasui reached first and was brought home when DP Charlotte Romero hit a double to put CCU on the board.  1B Shelby Fusich reached base after getting hit by pitch, and then 3B Stephanie Day singled through the left side scoring pinch runner Shelbie Day.

Coming into the fourth inning, the score was in the favor of the Roadrunners 3-2.  However, by the bottom CCU gained five runs 7-4.  Metro brought in their final run of the game in the top, but the Cougars were just heating up.  It started with catcher Amy Edison reaching base after getting hit by pitch.  Edison advanced to third after 2B Carly Perry hit a double.  CF Hanna Farmer brought Edison home with a single, and was followed by a single from Kendall Yasui to bring home Perry. After Farmer and Yasui advanced on an error, Charlotte Romero was then walked to load the bases. Shelby Fusich stepped up and reached on a fielders choice to score Farmer.  Stephanie Day hit a sac bunt to advance Fusich and Romero to 2nd and 3rd, and were then brought home after a double to right center from Alyssa Hanks.  CCU scored a much need five runs to gain the lead 7-4.

The top of the 5th inning was quick, only seeing four Roadrunners at the plate.  The Cougars three runs started with Amy Edison reaching on an error, but was advanced to third after a single from Carly Perry. Hanna Farmer came in and hit her first homerun of the season to score the only three runs of the inning, making the score 10-4.

Kenzie Mattey, now 12-1 this season, only faced three hitters in the 6th. First batter struck out swinging, second grounded out, and the third flied out. Freshman SS Kacie Burger hit a homer in the sixth inning improving the score to 11-4 and then Alex Garlock reached from being hit by pitch, but later stole second and advanced to third on an error. Garlock was brought in after a single from pinch hitter Jennie Winston to win the game in run rule, 12-4.

The Cougars center fielder Hanna Farmer stood out with 4 RBI, batting 2-4, 1 walk, 2 runs, and her first home run of the season.  Pitcher Kenzie Mattey allowed four runs off only six hits and struckout five.

Game 2

Colorado Christian was the first to score in the first inning with two runs.  It started with a single from LF Kendall Yasui, followed by a single from DP Charlotte Romero to advance Yasui to third.  Shelbie Day came in to pinch run for Romero, and stole second. After a Roadrunner error, Yasui scored and Sh. Day advanced to third.  Sh. Day was then brought in after a sac fly from Shelby Fusich to make the score 2-0.

The Roadrunners hit a three-run home run in the second inning to gain the lead 3-2, but the Cougars responded in the third frame with their second five-run inning of the day.  One thing is for sure, the Lady Cougars know how to score.  Carly Perry singled and then stole second.  Farmer singled and scored Perry.  Farmer tried to steal second, but was thrown out by Metro's catcher.  Charlotte Romero singled, Fusich was hit by pitch, and then Stephanie Day reached on a costly error to the shortstop and what should have been the third out for the Roadrunners.  CCU's second leading batter, right fielder Alyssa Hanks smacked a double into center field scoring all runners with 3 RBI.  Hanks then scored from a well-placed double by first baseman Alex Garlock.  The Cougars retracted the lead 7-3.

The fourth inning was quick for both teams, neither scoring a run. MSU snagged one run in the fifth to make the score 7-4, and an additional run in the sixth to close the gap with a score of 7-5.

In the Cougars last inning, Carly Perry hit a home run (RBI) and then Hanna Farmer tripled and advanced home from Jennie Winston's ground out.

All three of the Cougars pitchers made an appearance in the game starting with Jennifer Romero who took the win (9-1).  Sarah Probasco then relieved Romero, but was taken out in the top of the seventh as Kenzie Mattey closed the game with two strikeouts. The Cougars won the game 9-6.

CCU will be back at Lakewood Park, Saturday March 17th 11:00 AM vs the Metro State Roadrunners.
