The Cougars started off their second day of play vs the Roadrunners in what was one of the closest games all season. CCU won 10-9 in a game with four lead changes.
Christian scored first with two runs in the 1st frame. Metro then had a run of their own in the 2nd inning. It was a silent 3rd for both squads, but the Roadrunners utility player #20 Darby McGhee homered in the top of the 4
th, 3 RBI. Metro took the lead 4-2. On the mound for CCU was ace
Kenzie Mattey. After some solid at-bats from the Roadrunners, Mattey was under pressure to get the outs quickly. Luckily CCU's offense stole back the lead in the bottom of the 4
th frame as second baseman
Carly Perry doubled to center and left fielder
Kendall Yasui singled down the middle. The Cougars were up 5-4 going into the 5
th inning.
The 5
th inning was a painful one for the Roadrunners as they left three runners on base with two outs. Mattey struggled to find the zone as she gave up a hit, hit a batter, and walked another. But an easy ground out to the Cougars third baseman
Stephanie Day ended the inning in the Cougars favor. CCU had two solid hits in the bottom of the 5
th, but ended the inning with no runs. The score was still 5-4 Cougars.
Metro looked like a different team on day two with relentless batters that battled each pitch. In the 6
th, two Roadrunners reached scoring position on second and third from a walk and a double. Mattey was relieved by sophomore pitcher
Sarah Probasco.
At this point in the game CCU's defense was on high alert. Probasco came in and did a great job striking out her first batter. Coach Hays then made a visit to the mound to pump up his infield…. But the Roadrunners big hitter #23 Anderson smacked a hard hit double down the left field line to score the two runners. Metro gained the lead back 6-5. MSUD scored one more run off a slow fly ball to right fielder
Alyssa Hanks who couldn't make the out, but Hanks did end up getting the next fly-out to end the inning. The Roadrunners led 7-5 as CCU headed into the bottom of the 6
th inning.
No surprise, the Cougars responded with an aggressive rebuttal as they quickly filled up the bases with a Perry and Yasui single and then Romero was walked. At this point the only out was
Hanna Farmer's fly out to center, and CCU was not in a hurry to end the inning. Consecutively Shelby fusich singled (RBI),
Stephanie Day singled (RBI),
Alyssa Hanks singled (RBI), and then
Kacie Burger singled (2 RBI).
Metro missed two big opportunities to get the outs they needed before all the Cougars runs.
Kendall Yasui reached third on an easy hit to Metro's shortstop who didn't make the play because Yasui was too quick. Then the Roadrunners third baseman dropped the ball on what should have been their second out of the game. Pinch runner
Shelbie Day was safe at third and eventually scored, unearned. Christian was ahead 10-7 as they headed into the 7
th inning.
Kenzie Mattey came back into the game to start the 7th inning. And it wasn't a smooth one as the Roadrunners scored two more runs, but still fell just short of the victory 10-9.
CCU's
Sarah Probasco took her first win of the season as Mattey had her second save. Left fielder
Kendall Yasui batted perfect at 3-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Kacie Burger had 2 RBI and
Carly Perry hit 2-3 with 2 runs and an RBI.
The final game of CCU's series vs Metro State was another good one as the Cougars won 5-2 for the sweep. Freshman
Jennifer Romero started on the mound and did a great job forcing outs at the plate.
Both teams knocked in a run in the first inning. Metro almost scored two, but the Cougars freshman shortstop
Kacie Burger made an incredible play in the gap to throw the runner down at home. Burger then proceeded to hit a huge home run over two fences in left field for 3 RBI as CCU gained 4-1 on Metro.
The Roadrunners utility player #20 McGhee was on the mound and did a decent job as both teams went scoreless through the 3
rd, 4
th, and 5
th innings. Every out against the Cougars was a tough one though, and Christian did score again in the bottom of the 6
th as
Alex Garlock tripled to left center and Perry's single to center scored her in.
CCU's pitcher Romero completed six innings, but was relieved after the first batter in the top of the 7
th hit a home run on the first pitch. Mattey came in to get the last three outs and did with two ground outs and a K. The Cougars won 5-2 to complete the weekend sweep and stay undefeated in conference at 16-0.
