CCU Takes Down Tigers with Big Hits

Colorado Christian Softball defeated Fort Hays State University on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference, double header series.  The Cougs won 11-3 through five innings in the first game, and then with three home runs, won the second game 5-1. 
 
Winning pitcher in the first game was redshirt junior Kenzie Mattey (13-1).  Mattey through another great game going five innings with five strikeouts, allowing three runs off five hits. 
 
Cougar freshman Jennifer Romero (11-1) won the second game, throwing seven innings with six strikeouts, allowing only one run off two hits.  This gave her a 1.00 ERA.
 
The Cougars currently rank second (behind #1 Colorado Mesa) in batting average in NCAA Division II.  They are batting .385 on the year, and in their two games vs Fort Hays State they totaled 19 hits, 10 in the first game and nine in the second, batting .358.  Fort Hays was held to .158.
 
The Tigers couldn't handle the Cougars at-bats and made five fielding errors in the two games.  In game 1, FHSU had five unearned runs and in game 2 they had two unearned runs. 
 
In the first game, junior designated player Charlotte Romero went 2-4, with a 3 RBI double to right center, then a 2 RBI single up the middle, and another RBI fielder's choice.  More than half of the Cougars RBI in the game came from Charlotte's hits. 
 
All five of the Cougars runs in the second game were scored off of a home run.  Junior center fielder Hanna Farmer had a solo shot to right center in the bottom of the first inning, and then freshman shortstop Kacie Burger hit a solo shot in the second inning.  Burger then hit another homer, tallying 3 RBI and scoring Alyssa Hanks and Stephanie Day in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Kacie Burger totaled three home runs on the day, going 4-6, with four runs and five RBI.  Burger batted a .667. The Cougars had five home runs total, the three by Burger, one by Farmer, and sophomore third baseman Stephanie Day had one in the first game. 
 
CCU Softball is now 25-2 overall and remains 16-0 in conference play.
